Oil change

So, 1000 miles done and I've just had an oil change done. The old oil came out very clean with no signs of significant metal etc (at least nothing visible to the eye).

Nice to know it has fresh oil as I open the taps :-)

Didn't think a modern (new) engine needs it's first oil change until 10k miles? :-)

Was just thinking the same myself..

Maybe going as far to say it can be detrimental to change the oil before 10k? Something to do with deposits in the oil continuing to aid proper engine break in?

First oil change on the GTD at 10k at first service covered by the service plan...

They don't and it may be even longer than 10K... but it certainly won't do any harm...

In the past cars required this (the last I can think of were Subarus until early 2000s) because they ran special thin running in oil to allow the engine parts to bed in more effectively. These days engineering tolerances are much smaller and this is unnecessary...

I didn't realise it was required either.  Last time I had to do that was in 2004 when I bought a BMW Alpina and that needed an oil change after 2k.  But that was a handbuilt engine, so different ball park.

It isn't required... but as I said earlier, it is unlikely to do any harm (except perhaps to your wallet) if you do chose to have the oil changed at 1K or whatever mileage...

I'd have popped it back in again then.  :evil:

My first oil change is due at 30,000kms or 2 years...

Yes it certainly has the potential to do harm. Piston rings need time and wear to bed in. Babying an engine with an oil change this early on can't possibly help this process. Waste of time, money and finite resources.

I don't necessarily agree that it will do damage but I do agree that its a complete waste of time

Each to their own I guess. I've always done this on the advice of professional engine builders and never regretted it.

It certainly hasn't been nannied over the first 1000 miles, but driven carefully according to engine temperature, revs and load so the various components should be happy by now.
