Boot rattle - TPI?
« on: 24 January 2014, 18:14 »
Hi all,

Today I had my car at my local dealers for a rattle/knocking noise from boot area, the guys said they can hear it and there is a TPI from vw admitting its a problem, but not suggesting a fix and not letting dealers do anything to try and cure it...I am more than a bit annoyed, as the other issue it went in with wasn't fixed either. I had a sticky petrol flap, which I think has been reported on here. They claimed it wasn't an issue when they tested and so they won't fix that either. I think I will have to wait until the petrol flap sticks properly before that will be fixed.

Has anyone one else had the boot noise, or had vw not cure a known TPI?

Edit: after a bit of a google I found this thread: http://www.golfmk7.com/forums/showthread.php?s=e152a5a60d2540c41c339d74340b06b7&t=2568&page=5 post number 91 seems to have the same issue...

Cheers,
Phil

I had the sticky fuel flap issue as have lots of others here.
I squirted some white lithium grease (the stuff dealers spray on your hinges) onto the catch and it's been perfect since.

I had this boot rattle too, I think it's coming from the boot floor... I put some cloth in the gaps to stop it bouncing up and down and it seems to have stopped rattling.

Hey,

Thanks for the suggestions, I will pick up some lithium grease for the petrol cap. Regarding the boot floor I had already tried driving without the parcel shelf and it made no difference, I will try without the boot floor and see if that helps at all.

Cheers,
Phil

Let us know if you get any results. It's chucking it down today so won't be trying anything unless it clears up.

Is it just me that doesn't know what a TPI is?

Stands for Technical Product Information.  VW usually release these to dealers once they are aware of an issue.

Can anyone say if removing the boot lid solved the issue?

I am experiencing a very annoying plastic sounding rattle that is coming from the rear seating area but may be the boot. Without being sat in the seat myself its difficult to tell. Coincidently or not, it only appeared since I had my first rear seat passenger. Which made me think seat belt at first, but fastening them, putting the seat down, putting the boot lid into the lower position and removing the parcel shelf have done nothing to stop the irritating rattle.

It sounded to me like it was coming from the rear passenger side seating area / side, but that could just be due to my seating position (being in the drivers seat).

Has anyone else come across this issue / can confirm if its the boot floor or not? I sometimes notice a bit of a metally rattle / twang when shutting the boot or passenger side door, didn't know if that was related or not / normal either.

Drivers side fine and everything else about the car is rock solid perfect as you would expect from a German car, its just this pestering rattle is slowly starting to grind on me and making the normal solid feeling car sound cheap and nasty :(

I had exactly the same thing. It was driving me nuts because as you say it made the car sound very cheap. The way I solved it was to spray a dry PFTE lubricant on the hinges of the hatchback and where the parcel shelf slots into the grooves. Hey presto no more rattles.
