WLAN
« on: 22 January 2014, 11:31 »
Has anyone figured out how to make a mobile phone a wireless hotspot yet? I thought you needed the advanced phone prep but from things online and looking at the handbook a good few times it indicates you dont need advanced telephone prep for the phone to be a wireless hotspot. Anyone tried or this more mis information from VW?

Chris,

I've seen the options in the VCDS adaptation channels, and remember enabling them some time ago, and whilst it didn't throw up any error codes, it didn't actually do anything.

I suspect, there's an additional WLAN card inside the infotainment electronics unit when it's configured correctly from the factory that we don't have.

Of course, I am only guessing.

So what would setting up a WLAN allow us to do ?

Isn't the option for downloads to the Navpro something we don't get in the UK ?

Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs, but depending on your phone you can probably do this without any assistance from the car - it's called tethering.

Works well, just watch your data allowance as laptops and tablet software tends to assume it has access to lots of free data and will burn through a phone contract quickly.

Exactly what WLAN always does, allows the connected mobile phone in the car to act as a wireless hotspot for other people and devices also travelling in the car.

It's a little mute with IOS devices as these allow you to create a wireless hotspot anyway independent of the car, however it does take a few more presses etc. Not sure (but I guess they will) if Android devices do the same as well.

**edit** doh beat me to it (above)

The wifi hotspot comes as part of premium bluetooth. If your phone supports RSAP, then the car will take over and use its own receiver and antenna to connect to the mobile network.

If your phone does not support RSAP, ther is a sim card slot in between the 2 SD card slots. The car can then use this sim to connect to provide wifi hotspot and google earth, google search, google traffic on the discover pro.

Premium bluetooth is a more expensive option than advanced/comfort bluetooth.

I thought this was agreed months ago that it wasn't available in the UK and another VW Marketing blunder?

carnet isn't available in the UK for us VW drivers but the tethering option from your phone should be do able. I can't figure out how to tether though and the instruction manual isn't very clear either. not really sure what benefit it would give but with unlimited data I thought I might see if anyone else has been successful.
