Bluetooth Mic Wiring & Avoiding the airbags
« on: 21 January 2014, 23:23 »
Hey folks,

I fitted the mic for the bluetooth unit today, followed the guide but now just realized, there is one part that actually goes OVER the airbags, which I guess is not ideal at all.

If you imagine, you run the wiring from the map light area, across to the grab handle area and then down the outside of the a-pillar (just tucked the wire inside the black flexible rubber seal) the airbag in the A-Pillar is being avoided as the wire is on the outside of it, however, at the top of the A-pillar, where the wire comes from the grab handle, to actually get it to the outside of the A-pillar it goes across the top curtain airbag at the top of the driver side door.

Now, I can think of 2 possible solutions here, if anyone could advise that would be great;

1) Instead of going outside the A-pillar, take off the Pillar and run the cable down the inside - this to me, would be worse as the airbag would potentially be blocked off like that.

2) I will check tomorrow to see if there is a gap between the airbag at the top of the A-Pillar ,and the top curtain airbag, if so, will put the wire through that gap - this seems the best option, but pretty sure there was not a gap when I looked earlier.

Or it could be that the way I have done it is fine, but can't help but feel having a wire across the airbag is not the greatest idea should they ever go off.

The airbag would blow the wire to bits! Don't worry about it.

Those things go off like a bomb. I was in a mountain rescue team and we did a day with the fire service about getting people out of cars. They demonstrated these kevlar + wire mesh bags that you put over a steering wheel if the airbag hasn't gone off, to stop it exploding in your face as you work on the casualty. The only problem, as they demonstrated is they don't work. They put one on and set off the air bag and it blew the thing into bits, flying shrapnel everywhere. They then gave us one to try and destroy ourselves and with knives and 2 land rovers pulling at it we couldn't break it. Shows how powerful the airbags are!
