DSG - Clutch Slip ?
« on: 20 January 2014, 13:35 »
HI guys. wonder if other DSG owners can give their feedback on what I describe below or whether it's just my car please ?

The GTD is my second DSG (the first being my previous Scirocco GT 2.0 TDI Bluemotion). Both cars are with the 6 speed wet DSG box, and I expected them to behave very similar but they don't. It's a little difficult to describe, but here goes.

When the car is cold (either parked up overnight or at the end of the work day), when initially setting off (i.e. reversing off my driveway or pulling out of my parking space at work), as I select Reverse or Drive, I have to give it quite a few revs to pull off (i.e. 1500-1750 rpm) other wise the car doesn't move. Once the vehicle is rolling (even just a few MPH), the revs drop back even though the speed of travel is as fast or even faster than before. It's like for the first few yards or mph, the clutch is slipping, then sorts itself out. Strange thing is, when travelling in say 6th gear if I put my foot hard down, there's no slip and the car takes off like a scalded cat.

It's totally different to the Scirocco, which as soon as reverse was selected and foot taken off the brake, would start creeping back immediately without any intervention from the accelerator pedal. I thought at first it was the auto parking brake feature that the transmission had to overcome, however even when stopped momentarily at a junction,(and the green auto-hold light comes on - which isn't the full handbrake - just the ABS system holding the brake pressure) it still feels the same.

Can anyone else confirm that theirs feels the same. BTW, I'm talking about normal light pull always, not full throttle traffic light grand Prix style starts. I guess I need to temporally disable both auto handbrake and auto hold to see if these makes a difference ?

When you start the car, if you have your seat belt on, Auto Hold will engage. Auto Hold will not release until you press the throttle pedal. A gentle tap should be all that's needs, but then it doesn't always creep straight away.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

My morning routine - I normally get in the car, foot on brake and start her up, then put into reverse and press the hand brake button (auto hold button is lit). car will start creeping out in reverse once I lift off the brake pedal (seat belt on of course). I don't feel like I have to rev it up to the levels your saying to get it to move so something doesn't sound right.

Thanks for the quick response chaps. I'm going to give it another go by doing as FN-GTI says and disengaging the hand brake before I release the foot brake to see if that changes things. I'll report back.

Norbreck – I know its not much help but I'm not getting the issue you describe. I came from a 7sp DSG to a 6sp DSG and I can categorically say that the 6sp unit is much smoother.

Keep an eye on it and if the problem persists swing by your dealer (obvs ). However it does sound like an electronic hand break problem.

Sootchucker: Although manual, I was seeing a similar thing with mine when the handbrake was playing up. The car really wanted to keep the handbrake clamped on when engagiing a reverse maneuvre, compared to pulling forward. The autohold did not seem to want to disengage on its own. At times I had to knock the handbrake off (if reverse was first maneuvre for setting off) and the autohold off.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Same here, also from the DSG7.  I think the best way to describe the 7 gear dry clutch version is a little like a learner driver    The 6 gear wet clutch is so smooth

Right, I've just done a test, and when auto handbrake and auto hold is off, the car behaves exactly like it did in the Scirocco - i.e. perfectly. As some have said, it must be the extra drag that's required to get the Auto handbrake to release. Probably doesn't help that my drive is a slight uphill reverse as well.

Other than the above, it works perfectly and is every bit as smooth and responsive as I could ever want it to be.
