Keyless Entry - Range

Does anyone know what the range for the keyless entry system is? I park my car right outside my house, so it's possibly only 5 metres or so from where my keys are kept. Would this mean that if I had keyless anyone could get into my car during the night, or am I missing something?

I think it's about a metre so 5 metres should be absolutely fine. 

Edit: it's 1.5m so no problem

Correct me if I'm wrong, but although the Keyless can open the car from within 5 meters, the engine would only start if the fob is inside the vehicle?

I know it's like this with my In-Laws 2 Range Rovers with Keyless, and my brother-in-law's M135i is the same, so I'm assuming VW is like this too?

I once opened, started and manoeuvred by parents Discovery 4 with the keyless fob inside their house.

Worrying if you ask me, although it cut out and wouldn't let me drive out of the premises (out of range) i could have easily driven on to a low loader.

Needless to say I'm not a fan of keyless.

The system in the golf is a lot more specific than that. If you aren't close enough to touch the door handle it won't unlock (I'm not even sure that standing near the back end of the car will unlock the doors, only the boot?) and you need to be inside to start the car - I was trying to turn the ignition on while washing it the other day and had to lean right in through the door before it would do it.

id be surprised if mine was even 1.5m, i have to stood next to my handle for it work, if someone else tries and im like behind them it doesnt work, so i wouldnt worry about leaving your keys by the door

The range is shown by a diagram in the handbook. You have to stand really close (30/40 cms) to the door or hatchback to get it to open...

Oh it's true, I can confirm.

I've been standing next to the car (2 metres away), and my mate went to try and unlock it, and he couldn't.
I had to be right next to the handle pretty much to unlock it.
I've also got something out of the boot, whilst the car was locked, and still passengers couldn't unlock it at the front.

So totally safe.  I'm a big fan of keyless since I had it on my Toyota before.  The GTIs is definitely a lot better.

If I stand by the drivers door with key, a person on the passenger side cannot open the passenger side door.  That's how small the actual range is.
