Brakes (again)
« on: 19 January 2014, 17:20 »
By now I must surely be annoying people, so apologies if that's the case. I'm back with more braking related queries.

Firstly, been reading a lot of workshop manuals, and it seems that when the term "bolt on upgrade" is put before "brake kit", it seems quite literal. From people's experience, provided all bolts, lines and tools are at hand, is it simply a case of remove old - assembly is reversal of removal (with new, bigger bits)? I panic about brakes as they're a little bit important, you know?

Secondly, I've researched brands and am aware that ATE are essentially the OE manufacturer of brakes for Volkswagen, but what's the brands worth giving my money over to for performance parts? There's many out there, listed across many websites, but the ones I seem to gravitate towards are Black Diamond as they're cheap but seem to be uprated versions of OEM parts.

Maybe a weekend soon I'll get my new brakes on and STFU on here asking questions... Just maybe...

I sell V-Maxx and AP big brake kits and both are simply unbolt the old and rebolt on the new (all bolts, hoses, carriers etc are all included in the kits)

The big break kits are not cheap though so if you want to just uprate your discs and pads for performance version's then it's the same as just changing them for std spec one's

(b.t.w I sell Mintex - Delphi and Brake engineering as o.e replacements or EBC & Zimmermann as my performance one's, If you want a quote on any kind of set up let me know  :wink: I have some listed on my website http://oemandmore.co.uk/braking-150-c.asp for the MK5 although that part of my site is not really comprehensive as yet)

Please don't mention AP BBK to me as I desire them, even if I just have a caliper to put on my shelf. I already have my big brakes sat in my room, but I think they'll be better on the car. It's mainly the brake bleeding bit that I've never really done, need to get a good kit. But I'm pretty sure I have all the bolts and bits (the kit in question came straight of a 2012 Golf R).

Thinking of getting myself this;

I have access to a 90-120PSI air compressor so seems to solve my brake bleeding concerns.

Personally I'd bleed the system the best you can yourself and then take it to the dealer for a brake fluid change for £59 which obviously includes a re-bleed, the only sure fire way to bleed the mk5/6 system properly is by using VCDS or the dealer VAS system to cycle the ABS pump and purge it of air and old fluid, it'll be the best £59 you'll spend on the car  :smiley:

See, I got the brake fluid done just a year ago, but I may see if they'll do a deal on just checking it and purging it of air fully. I already have VW brake fluid so they won't even need parts, just a bit of time. What does the dealer charge, about £1,000 per hour or something isn't it? :laugh:

Brake fluid change is fixed price at £59 including fluid at all my local dealers so I'd just get them to do the lot tbh mate?  :smiley:

Always got to try haggling for a deal, there's no such thing as a fixed price. ;)

If I go to stage two tuning, I'll potentially swap my front brakes for some AP Racing ones. They're highly rated so that's the way I'd go.

After taking my rear R32 calipers apart, it's become apparent I'll need new seals and also a tiny metal bracket that sits in the carrier and helps seat the pads.

Does anyone have a good place to get seal kits from? Found a website that's pretty comprehensive but maybe someone knows a better one?

Also discovered that GSF can provide Brembo pads and discs, which unless someone can tell me why I shouldn't trust this brand, I'll be upgrading all round to their pads and discs.
