Lowering on the cheap?
« on: 13 January 2014, 14:47 »
Without wanting to go down the cheap coilovers or ebay springs route...

I'm on stock 8v shocks and springs and only want to drop a tad, no more than 30mm really.

So I found these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-MK1-MK2-Golf-Jetta-Lowering-Spring-Caps-DSX-15mm-RED-/131073477909?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e84968d15

Which I gather go between your turret and top mount? and reduce the height 15mm.

So if I went down this route and got some OEM 16v springs which I gather are a 10mm lower already I'd get about the height I'm looking for whilst maintaining OE quality and feel.

Is this a suitable way to do it... or is this a big no no?
And what about the back?

Sorry for the Newbie question ?!?

It depends what you consider "on the cheap"?

I have OEM shocks and Eibach -30mm spring on mine and I really like it, comfortable, but still feels hard enough to be sporty. It set me back ~£200... cheap? Eibach also do -20mm springs IIRC
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

Well, as in I've just spent £1100 on bodywork which has kind of blown the budget  :undecided: so there's literally nothing left but I'd like to finish the look if I can.

In the link I put up, the caps are £25, and I've already had someone offer me some standard 16v spring that they were going to bin as they's just upgraded.

so if this is and acceptable way to lower a car I'm looking at 25mm lower for £25 kind of cheap! but that only deals with the front.

Or I could maybe manage £30-40 for some second hand "branded" 30mm springs that I'd be happy to clean up??

I just want to know how these caps work and if it's an OK thing to do and what can I do about the back? ta,

Is the amount you want to lower it even noticeable, 25mm isn't a great deal of movement. And you still don't have a way to lower the rear. I would buy lowering springs all round so you know what you have.

I wouldn't recommend it but it's your call, if you really want to go lower on the cheap you could always cut your springs.

I personally wouldn't waste £20 for 15mm.
And I wouldn't go to the hassle of taking the front suspension to bits for it either.
Just spend a bit more on some cheaper lowered springs, or wait a while for some coilovers.
I got mine for £170 and slammed it.
But it depends whether you want
Comfort
Comfort and stance
Or just stance with limited comfort!

don't go near them lowering caps. they catch the rubber top mount on the slightest bump. tried them before and wouldn't recommend them at all. go for the eibach 30mm spring kit.
