Air mass meter issue

I have just had my car down to the garage to be tested on the diagnostics machine and I was told that the air mass meter was running weak, I was told its gonna cost £140 for a new one:shocked:, just wondering if anyone knows where I can get one a bit cheaper as I am totally skint at the mo , oh and I asked about remapping but he advised against it and recommended a chip instead does anyone have any recommendations on a chip, my car- W reg(2000) golf 1.8T 20v, thanks in advance, Razla

By rechipping aren't you remapping anyway? Same thing isn't it

What made you take your car into be checked in the first place? Is it not running right?

not sure m8, ive never had any work like this done b4, my car seems to be a little sluggish at bottom end so thats why I took it in! he seems to think its the air mass meter.

goto turbo-pacs its on the way to durham pretty good with me and they know there stuff and they will do it while you wait i nipped over to tesco for a fry up while i waited have RR tuning facilities chips etc etc

If its getting sluggish then it could well be the MAF. My Dad had to replace his MAF on his Audi as it had practically stopped pulling in 2nd gear! Totally transformed the car. However, it only cost £70 from VAG and it was very easy to replace.

In order to diagnose the problem he took it to VAG, they plugged a laptop in and got him to drive the car and rev it at certain speeds in certian gears.............they didn't charge for that and we simply ordered the part

air mass meters on mk4's can be cleaned up with carb cleaner as a temporary solution, but they're £75 from vw on an exchange basis, not £140 as you were quoted.

There are cheaper ways to turn up your boost but the ecu will only compensate the timing so far.. then your car goes bang. Anyone who recommends breaking open the ECU to solder in a new chip, rather than remapping by just plugging in to the obd port is a bit of a noddy.. i'd find yourself a new local garage if i were you
