Picking up two new Golfs tomorrow - Advice
« on: 10 January 2014, 10:50 »
Tomorrow morning I'm heading over to the dealer to pick up my brand new GTD (excited much?) and the wifes new, pre-reg 1.6TDI.

Having never bought a new car in my life, what should I expect and what should I do with both cars? How detailed do I need to be on the inspections of each? The pre-reg only has delivery mileage and hasn't been used as a demo, but noticed it's being sold on the paperwork as 'used, qualifying', which the dealer has mentioned means it gets the warranty and everything as normal, just that as it has one owner being a pre-reg (one of the dealers other car dealerships) it is classed as new. How would this affect anything under the SOGA compared to my new, new car?

Obviously, painfully excited about picking up both, but just wondered if anyone has any advice as about things that should be done :)

Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong but I was told by a dealer who was obviously trying to scare me off a competitors car, that pre reg cars make you the second owner which for insurance purposes if anything happens to the car within the first year, instead of it being written off and you getting a like for like car, you are only given the market value for it which is usually less by this time.

When was it registered as that is when the warranty will start.

He painted a right gloomy picture for me but I'm sure its not that bad. I had a pre-registered Vectra once  saved me thousands

There is a checklist on here. Print it out and take it along with you. Take your time studying the bodywork as that will be harder to get rectified if you notice something a few days later. Everything else should be covered by warranty. Also ask to see a copy of the PDI.
When I collected my last brand new Golf, it had a ding on the side of the car but I didn't notice it due to the rain. Luckily the dealer sorted it a week later.

You must be the only person to have ever gone and collected two new cars at the same time!

When I collected my car I had gone through the delivery checklist published on here but found it to be rather OTT.  If you'd spec'd your car I'd say make sure it has all your options but since that doesn't apply then just make sure it looks immaculate all over, you have both keys (with GTD on them) and there's a full tank of fuel.

The excitement will probably overcome anything you've attempted to remember from a checklist anyway.

The one thing you absolutely mustn't forget is to get plenty of photos and put the best ones on here

Thanks for the advice :)

I may be being somewhat simple, but I can't find the link to the checklist? Where is it?

Sadly, no full tanks of fuel, I already know that one. I negotiated hard, but didn't manage to get that included. 20L a car is all we get.

Still, I am getting a £500 fuel card thrown in, so swings and roundabouts and all that...

Hi Mk1Macca,
This was the checklist I used from the forum on Thursday when we picked up mine:
1.   Performance pack (GTI logo on brake calipers)
2.   Two keys (make sure they have GTI engraved plastic pieces and both open and start the car)
3.   English manuals
4.   V5C Document and 12 Month Tax (both will be posted out later but you should get a letter to say the tax is in the post)
5.   iPod lead - lighting cable
6.   Locking wheel nut and tools in the boot
7.  Service plan (ask about service intervals)
8.  Full Tank of Fuel/4 gallons tho’ is standard
9.  Dynaudio (Sub in the spare wheel and marking on tweeters located in the pillars)
10.  Set of mats

C.   Quality control:
1.   Check delivery mileage and reset if dealership hasn't already (hold mileage reset button for 30 seconds)
2.   Check the oil, water and other fluids and that they are not left at shipping levels
3.   Look very carefully for any small dents or chips. Crouch low and look along the sides of the vehicle
4.   Make sure dealer has filled in and stamped the PDI part of the service book
5.   Check panel alignment
6.   Test full, half beam, indicators, fog lights, hazard warning and interior lights
7.   Test rear lights and make sure all 4 sections are working
8.   Check tyres for damage, pressures and the spare in the boot
9.   Check the transport blocks have been removed from the suspension springs
10.  Check the bolt caps and centre badges have been fitted on the wheels
11. Check the VIN number (in the windscreen) matches the VIN number on all your documents.

Hope it helps  Enjoy collecting, it's double the fun for you two!!!

That's what I mean, OTT.  This is all covered by their own PDI which you get a copy of.

Certainly read all this stuff but a lot of it is not really necessary so long as you are fairly close to the dealer - if its a hundred miles away then be OCD as you will not be very happy at having to drive all the way back for them to add the GTD metal bits on the key fobs or stamp the PDI in the book or suchlike.

My advice is fairly simple:

1. If its a new car - make sure its the car you ordered with regard to colour and options (or in your case definately with the options they told you it had on it - if you find any more - keep quiet!)

2. Make sure that here are no cosmetic issues or damage of any sort on the car as once you drive away the dealers responibility for stuff like that quickly starts to diminish.

With both cars do have a quick look under the bonet as often rags are left there by the PDI chaps - check your levels in the next day or so but don't get too immersed in the technical stuff!

The comment earlier re insurance and second owners - my undertanding is the new car replacement aspect of policies is related to the gae of the car (ie up to 12 months) rather than how many owners, but do check with your insurer.

In terms of the pre-reg car - to a large degree it is what it is and I would be extremely careful to check for cosmetic damage to the bodywork - particulary wheels as anything discovered more than a  day or two afterwards is going to be the subject of an argument.

Finally - if they are nearby I would give consideration to making two trips and collecting the cars seperately so you can focus attention on each transaction individually.

I ended up rejecting my GTI due to what was missed on the PDI so you need to check everything yourself!

I think you would notice quite quickly if it was the wrong colour
