NON WORKING TEMP GAUGE + FLASHING COOLANT LIGHT!!!
« on: 08 January 2014, 19:12 »
Hi Everyone,
Completely new to the forum, but am looking for advice on the above problem.
I acquired a 1990 Golf Driver a month or so back; one issue I have not been able to solve is the temp gauge not working. I've tried lots of things I have read about on forums such as; changed temp sensor, changed coolant bottle cap, checked connection to sensor, changed voltage stabiliser at back of cluster. The good news on this was that it has brought the fuel gauge back to life!!
However during the course of all of this the cluster warning light for coolant levels has now come on and continues to flash no matter what!!!
Can anyone tell me what it is likely to be and how to resolve it please, as I can think of no more things to try!!!
Thanks in anticipation of your help

you may have damaged a track on the circuit on the back of the instrument cluster - they are very delicate :(

if you earth the wiring plug for the temp sensor it should send the temp gauge to max. if it doesnt then its wiring/cluster issue

There are three wires connected to the engine block. I think it's the one at the rear you need to check, it may have come off. It will have one of those flat female wire connectors on the end of it and there should be a small pin/clip it slides onto. I had exctly the same problem with mine. re-connected and all was fine again.
