Turbo info GTI/Cupra/R
« on: 08 January 2014, 10:18 »
Hi All,

The specs for the mk3 Cupra are now out and surprisingly even though it makes 280 bhp it only makes the same 258lb/ft in torque, which got me to thinking about what Turbo's they use. Now on the previous gen it was Ko3/IHI for the FR/GTI and Ko4 for the S3/Curpa/R etc.

I have asked the question on SCN and i'm told that the R (etc) also uses an IHI turbo, now is there any chance that we use the same turbo and therefore have the same tunability?

I highly doubt that the mk7 GTI shares the same turbo as the mk7 .:R

The 2014 Volkswagen Golf R has been unveiled today, ahead of its global debut that's going to take place at the Frankfurt auto show this September. We'll go straight to the business end of the 2014 VW Golf R - its engine. The 2014 Golf R is powered by a 2.0 TSI turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine that develops 221 kW / 300 PS from 5,500 rpm to 6,200 rpm and 380 Nm of torque from 1,800 rpm to 5,500 rpm. This is 70 hp and 30 Nm of torque more than the standard Golf VII GTI. In comparison to the engine used in the GTI, the 2014 Golf R's engine comes with a modified cylinder head (together with exhaust valves, valve seats and springs), new pistons, high-pressure injection valves and a new turbocharger.

if its true that they are both made by IHI i am sure it will be a lot simpler/cheaper to swap than say from a IHI to a Ko4
