gear stick totaly loose

Hi folks. Its been a while
My 1.9 tdi mk3 golf broke down tday,
Can't select any gears, and the gear stick is wide open totaly free. Feels like the linkage somehow came apart. Anyone had this? (I hav on a ford but never on my dubs) Would this be wear and tear!

Any ideas would be welcome,

TDI's are cable shift so id be first checking to see if the end that attaches to the shift tower on top of the gearbox is still in one piece. Next check beneath the gearstick gaitor to see if the circlip has popped off the cable there as well.
