I have rarely driven my GTi in temperatures over 7°C since I had it in November. In fact much of my driving is at below zero at this time of year.

The stop start system works after about 5 minutes driving when the oil temperature is approaching 85/90°...

Surprised that the GTI holds off for a long while on warm-up before start-stop kicks in, it's available on my GTD pretty much from 1/2 a mile down the road. I suspect that as soon as the car is warm enough not to need glow-plug assistance to restart the stop-start is allowed.

Maybe there's a worry that the spark plugs on the GTI would otherwise coke up quickly if it pretty much has to get to full operating temp for stop-start to be available.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Hi,

got an issue with my GTI. On starting the car, there is a MFD error' stop start system'

so booked into my local (aberdeen) dealer only to be told the system does not work below 7degrees and if I book it in and nothing is wrong I will be charge £50 diagnostic fee. I just about blew up! 3rd GTI I have had and very rarely have I been in with warranty issues or the like. Extremely disappointed with the customer service. Car now booked in via another person on the service desk but I will be complaining about this to specialist cars Aberdeen.

also have a really annoying rattle (worse in sport mode) under acceleration. believe it is coming from the glasses compartment mounted up near the map reading lights. Also squeak/squeal from the suspension under low speed maneuvers.. so far not so good on the mk7 (had a mk5 and mk6) other than that it's a nice car.
If you haven't already, check out the "suspension squeak" thread - if your noise is from the front it's more than likely the self same problem that many of us have already experienced and the fix is now well understood and documented.  (Rubbish that's it's still happening though).
Having spent some time trying to figure out the stop start system myself I'd totally agree that there's absolutely no way that error message is normal.
Hope they get it all put right for you quickly

The conditions for the Stop/Start to work are as follows.
The vehicle is stationary (speed = 0km/h).
The engine speed is below 1200rpm
The coolant temperature is between 25°C and 100°C.
The brake vacuum is more than 550mbar
The energy required to restart the engine that was calculated before “engine off” can be supplied
by the battery (starting voltage prediction).
The battery temperature is greater or equal to -1°C and less than 55°C.
The air-conditioning requirement of the occupants is not too high.
The difference between target and actual vent temperature is below 8°C.
The diesel particulate filter is not in regeneration mode (diesel engines only).

All of these conditions must be met for the car to start. External temperature is not used so tell the VW tech he is smoking his socks.

lockhart, did you hear anything back with this. On 2 totally random occasions over the last 2 months or so ive got this. Dunno if you got this but I start up then hear a crunch from the engine and the error start stop message comes up. I turn it off then back on again and its gone and all working fine again :S

Sounds like the first person was administrative and pushing out the standard response to 'normal' times when start/stop is not operating due to conditions.

MFD is displaying an Error! so would have just booked it as thought the person warning me over potential costs had no idea what talking about.
