New Year, new rattle
« on: 05 January 2014, 16:39 »
Just got rid of one rattle and another one starts, dammit

Went for a run to Hastings and Rye and had very loud rattle/vibration for whole journey.  Hard to make out exactly where it's coming from.  From driver's seat it sounds like it's around passenger B pillar, but from passenger seat sounds like driver's B pillar.  Door seals perhaps?   Gummi Pflege any good?
Any suggestions?

Note to Kent Highways:  if you want a lesson in decent road repairs (and you need one) then look no further than your neighbour, Sussex, as they seem to have a far better grip on the problem.

You haven't got any sunglasses tucked away in the compartment do you?

I had a very similar rattle for days in the same locations you say, turns out it was my Aviators from the summer time.

For door seals use VW Krytox, well spendy at nearly 30 quid for a little bottle, but I can assure you it works wonders,VW use it to stop the creaks on the EOS roof, I done my MK5 nearly a year ago and the transformation was amazing,i didn't realize how much noise was coming from the door rubbers against the paintwork (the felt part around the top) until I used this stuff,Plus its designed to not deteriorate the rubber.
Didn't cure the rattle, that turned out to be the lower side panel of the centre console.

Never keep sunglasses in the overhead compartment, for that very reason. Have emptied all storage areas too but it persists.  Doesn't sound like anything loose either.    Definitely more of a door rubber noise - rattly/buzzy vibration.

Thanks for the advice, may give the Krytox a go.  It's the DuPont oil stuff, yes?  Where's best to get it from, doesn't seem that easy to find online?  Some on ebay at £36 for 30ml.  Still if it works as well you say and lasts that long, then it'd be worth it.

Part number for the VW Krytox is G052172A1

Krytox = DuPont GPL-105 which is in liquid form, you can get GPL-205 which is Krytox in grease form but the 105 is the better choice for door seals/felts, the VW Eos roof kit in impregnated wipe form is also pretty handy for a single application use if you can pick one up cheap enough,
www.gbrtech.co.uk are the UK importers of Krytox and are much cheaper than the dealers price wise but do have a minimum order of £30 so it normally works out at 2 bottles for roughly the cost of 1 compared to VW pricing

Not the same as your rattle Booth11, but I fixed what I would describe as a faint but persistent knocking sound from the passenger B-pillar area (sounded like the retracted seat belt rattling against the trim) by the sheer coincidence of oiling & greasing the door handle & locking mechanism inside & out.

GS WAX and Beddie, cheers for the info

Ordered Krytox oil from TPS today - 30ml@£28.   GBR tech cheaper, (approx £18 bottle) but as said got to buy 2 and then add postage and VAT, pushing £50.

Will report back once it's done

Got the Krytox.  Planning to do it Friday.  Couple quick questions for those that have used the stuff (GS WAX, Beddie?)

Is it definitely ok to use it on the felt part of the upper door seals in addition to the normal rubber seals around the doors?   Best applied using fingers rather than the applicator?
