I'd hazard a guess that a mini USB flash drive might just fit.

If not, just use one with an extension lead :)

I suppose but why get rid of the MDI port which has worked brilliantly for me in both my Scirocco's and replace it with a bog standard part from Halfords that more than likely will not leave enough room to insert a USB drive and shut the cover.... Bell Ends !!!

Here you go mate, thanks to Sootchucker for posting this...

According to ETKA, there is a new USB Socket module (the one that goes in front of the gear stick), that is USB and Ipod Compatible:

5G0 035 222 D (the "D" at the end is the important bit)- ETKA Description - Electronic Interface for External Use - AUX In, USB (ipod Compatible). This seems to be around the £20 mark ish.

It would seem that this would need to be used with a new connection cable (between the USB Module and the Media unit in the glove box) 5G0 971 650 AA (as this one superseded the old cable on 1st August 2013, again the "AA" at the end is important). These seem to be around the £35-£40 mark.

Of course I've never tried these, just reporting what ETKA says.

My iPhone4/S MDI cable fits perfectly and I also have a iPhone 5/S cable too, pointless in ripping the dash apart to replace with this new USB version.
However I would have loved if VW put the MDI in the arm rest.... annoying why I can't connect the MDI when my phone is in the Advanced Phone Kit pocket.

This sucks for us early adopters.  These new fangled USB ports  should been standard on the redesign/mk7 from the go.

To be fair your right, the whole MDI/USB and Advanced Phone Kit saga could have been avoided with a bit of forward planning and thinking on. VW's part.
Why on earth move the port to the front, it was located in the armrest in the MK6, should have kept it there.
I can't see how I can use my MDI without running and extension somehow into the armrest....  :embarrassed: or I could buy this new wiring loom and USB interface and then extend it to fit it to the port in the arm rest.

When I ordered my car, the factory wouldn't let me spec mdi. They never gave a reason just said no can do. Maybe mdi is being replaced with this. I hope my car has this new version too.

I found my largest USB stick this morning and tried it to see, the flap does close so you shouldn't need a extension.
