mk1 cab problem
« on: 25 August 2005, 22:42 »
I moved house recently and had to start my much neglected 86 gti cab project car, its sat in the garage unstarted for around a year while I tried to convince myself I was still interested in getting it on the road despite buying it around 5 years ago and never actually using it, in the past I have changed filler neck, cleaned out the tank, put another metering head on it,changed the fuel pump/accumulator, plugs, injectors and distributor cap but that was 2 or 3 years back, now after a bit of a struggle I have got it started but its misfiring at anything above idle, the lift pump was very noisy so I put a new one on though I can still hear that humming a bit , so whats my problem ? fuel pump, accumulator or maybe injectors these replacement parts weren't new but the car was running OK when I originally fitted them, any experienced opinions appreciated, cheers.

Just a thought, are you still running on the petrol that was left in the tank? Thought I read somewhere that it can go stale, maybe turn watery??? Probably a stupid answer,,sorry :embarassed:

Fair point m8 but no, I put around £15 in it as it was practically empty, it runs a lot worse from cold and improves a bit when its hot but its still not right, thanks for the input though, the response has been disappointing up to now, perhaps another site would be more helpful.

Can you test the injectors, basically taking out the fuel rail and holding it over a basin while you turn the engine over, I know it's not ideal as testing the spray pattern but if one is not opening then you can see it and will at least know if pump etc are working? I would also replace plugs and get a known good ht lead and swap it onto each plug to eliminate a dodgy lead? Have you chked the contacts in the distributor, clean up earths on engine? These are just simple chks but you never know?

The flap in the metering head is very sensitive, it needs to be spot on or it wont run properly, pretty sure the Haynes as the correct setup procedure?

All good advice, the cars in a lockup at the moment, hoping to get it towed to my new place soon then I will work on it, I will check the injectors usually I do one at a time into a glass jar so I can observe the pattern, leads, plugs and dizzy are all OK I think, any other suggestions ?.
