VR6 Problems

hiya,

 I've got a mate who has a MK2 with a VR6 in it, recently its been a bit of a pain.
 The engine will start but only runs for a few seconds, we've changed the fuel pump, ecu fuel pump relay and temp sender. Cant remember everything he's tried but does anyone have any ideas???

I've read the crank? position sensor can be a cause of many a MK3 problem, as well as the lambda/O2 sensor if you have one.  I know nothing about VR6s so this is probably aaaaaaaall wrong
