Had a similar thing on my mates mk4, he had blown the diff, made a racket like a bag of spanners being shaken. On removing the box we found a hole in the casing. The rivets had sheared off causing the diff to pop. I'll post a picture in a minute.

I do hope this is it as I can get a box for a couple of pints but a vr6 g60 clutch setup will be more lol can the diff be changed or is it easier to do the whole box

Whole box will be cheaper, loads out there, we paid £80 for the replacement. 3hours to remove and fit the gearbox without a ramp.

Did you have thrust release baring done at same time as clutch?
Could be completely off cause I've never had the baring go but I've heard of them making grinding noises etc and know some garages don't do the baring to save time and money..

Does it seem to go into gear OK?

Slides into gear ok when not running but. When running it clinks into gear and constantly grinds clutch in or out is minimal difference

could be a drive shaft that has snapped or lost a few splines

Well it's brew time I am halfway through pulling her apart I have taken clutch cylinder out dropped the mounts removed all of the bolts on the bell housing ready to pull it off as soon as my mate is finished with his spline bits I can go pick them up to remove the driveshafts then it's just slide the box out and start poking around
Johnny vr6 that's exactly what I first thought as it happened to the same effect on my mates vr but after a poke around neither the cup or the driveshaft tries to spin
