Please tell me those auto dimming rear view mirrors aren't as crap as i think??

Right well i don't know what's happened here...

Took the photos on my iPhone 4S & you can see the oval in the centre of the mirror. In one photo i'm pointing to the edge of the oval bit & in the other you can see it on my white hat.

Upload the photos to the PC & you can't really see it. So maybe if you take the photos off here & put them on your iPhone it'll show?

Is it simple/cheap enough to repair?

If the answer involves any technical electrical know-how then no. If it's just simple take off, put on, then it should be ok.

 Buy a 2nd hand one, remove broken unit, fit new unit and test

As above its simple enough remove/replace but there not cheap and theres the risk of cracking the windshield taking it off

Nobody knows how to put these things on.

There is a ring around the "fingers" that grasp the ball end of the mounting piece. This needs to be removed so the fingers open up easy, pop mirror on and then slide the ring back into place.

sorry to resurrect an old thread. I just bought 1 to install into my car and the glass is a bronze colour... they guy listed it on ebay saying it worked when removed, but he can't test it so sold as seen - typical.

hisay be a silly Q...but what are the benefits to these and what do they actually do.

Have seen alot for sale, but never really knew the difference.
