There wasn't one on the last MK4 (2002 1.9 TDI 100bhp) but there is on the current (2002 1.9 TDI 130bhp).

Currently telling the outside temp & the miles until next service but that's it. Pretty poor. I'm guessing it can tell more but not sure how you work the bloody thing.

As for consulting the manual - it never came with it. No paperwork at all other than V5C & MOT certificate.

I do know the mileage display wont reset which is a bloody nuisance.

on the whiper stalk, theres a switch on the end press it to change what it tells you. and press reset to switch between settings1 and settings2

To add to that, the button on the end of the wiper stalk is a rocker switch. Press that up or down to scroll through the display.

There are two different memories, 1 and 2. To switch between them, press the Reset button on the bottom of the stalk. If you press and hold the Reset button, it will reset which ever memory you are in, 1 or 2.

Memory 1 will reset by itself after the car has been turned off for around 2 hours. Memory 2 will keep running until you reset it, or maybe after 2000miles.

I've always tended to reset Memory 2 each time I fill up, then I can keep an eye on fuel consumption over each tank of fuel at a time.

With the MPG ....

What's the difference between the MPG reading & then when you flick the switch, the MPG reading that has a circle with a line through it? What's the difference between those 2?

Also, when i was driving his car back, i thought the MPG was a bit strange. One second i was doing 18mpg & then the next second (literally, 1 second) i was doing 160MPG. Yes, one hundred & sixty. WTF? Now, i was driving smoothly & not revving it hard. Think i only had it up to 2k revs anyway.

One mpg is instant and the one with the circle is the average mpg, instant readings will vary hugely as you've already discovered.
