Amber Oil Warning Light Problem?
« on: 12 December 2013, 21:52 »
Hey folks

Noticed this evening when I got into the motor the oil light warning was illuminated (amber) on start up and went off after a few seconds, it came on for a 2nd occasion shortly after but yet again it went out and never came back on.

I carried on driving without issue or warning as I was only 5 minutes away from home.  Unable to check oil levels due to time of night but has somebody had anything similar?  I'm no expert but the book suggest possible oil sensor?

Had a service March 2013 and car covered approx 6-7k since > car is 2010 Gti

Thanks for any info/advice in advance Ashley

Amber oil warning is to warn of low oil level, iirc its set to trigger when a 1 litre top up is required
Its unusual it went back out again though as to clear the warning you have to both top up the oil level and open/close the bonnet as the car monitors the bonnet catch sensor to 'see' that you have intervened to check the oil

Yeah, low oil level, as said.

Similar thing happened on my old mk5. When oil was low, the warning light would come on on initial start up, then it would go out and stay out rest of drive but it always came back on at start up. Problem solved by topping up   Check my oil levels monthly now.

Thanks for the replies all much appreciated.  Was desperate to get some oil in so popped down to local Halfords and picked up litre of Castrol Edge 5W30 @ £20 which I thought was expensive.

Friend at work recommended euro car parts and found this link

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Volkswagen_Golf_2.0_2010/p/car-parts/car-lubricants-and-car-fluids/lubricant-and-fluids/engineoil/?521771021&1&b3167e337a85faf1e803f2154154826435e5688a&000398

Basically 4 litre Castrol Edge reduced from $48 to £27.99 so thought id let folks know in case they are in need of some.

Thanks Ash

Tesco do 1litre castrol edge for about £12 and main dealers are only about a tenner for quantum oil

Ideal to keep in the boot for top ups.
