Car wont start
« on: 12 December 2013, 16:31 »
Hi everyone

My car 08 gti ed30,battery is fully charged but just wont start.

The car has been stood for long periods without use(I know not a good idea)

wonder if anyone has maybe got a clue what might be up before I take it to stealers.

Thanks

edit.....
Just tried the engine start function on my battery charger and it started.
Is it possible the battery is knackered even though it says fully charged?
any help appreciated.

You really need to check the voltage with a multimeter.
A battery that's left in a discharged state for a long time may become damaged beyond repair due to sulphation.
Without traction power is nothing!

ROUND 2......

Took car to dealers last week got new battery on £170 lighter, they did a diag on car and told me the suspect to non start was the starter motor £280 fitted which is my next port of call.

Now how come a car with 2070 miles on it the starter is knackered I just don't understand.

If I connect my battery charger with engine start on,it starts first time.

If anyone knows why it would start with engine start charger connected, and not off the brand new battery.

Thanks.

Wow, a new battery for £170!

You could have bought two varta ones that are well above the oem spec for less money than that.

IMO if the car starts with the charger connected then the issue is the battery for whatever reason is not providing enough amperage to crank the starter motor.

That's with the diag included which was £60 plus fitting £20,so worked out around £90 for battery

I cant for the life of me see a new starter motor sorting this problem out, just don't know what to do..

Thanks again Bacillus.

How are you connecting your jump starter?

Directly to the battery or the negative on something else?

Where all my moneys went.

I dont get the starter motor being the issue if there is a enough with the charger connected.  Have you looked at the new battery and ensured its to the spec needed? Have you checked the battery terminals are good and tight? obvious I know but....

connecting it just how you would if you was just charging your battery.

The spec of battery is more than up to the job.

terminals all tight

update...
just started first time, been out for half an hour,no problems.

I wondered if just starting the car in garage and letting it tick over and warm up but not actually going anywhere is causing it to gas the engine up maybe.

Thanks to dTEA,bellend, bacillus for the help on trying to solve it.
