Bottom hose cold.
« on: 11 December 2013, 12:53 »
Changed thermostat and temp sensor, temp gauge goes upto 90 and stays there but bottom hose is still cold.
Could this be an air lock or water pump failure?
Forgot to check water pump whilst thermostat out.

easy way to check water pump, drive it, it will soon get to 100deg+

is the bottom hose supposed to get hot? i thought the bottom hose will only get warm if the thermostat is open. can only assume that your stat didnt open because it didnt get hot enough...

pretty hard to get an air lock, take cap off expansion tank and give the engine a bit of a rev, thats the usual way to get any air bubbles out, however, again id assume that if there was an air lock the car would proberbly over heat.

is the thermostat in the right way round.
I saw someone put one in wrong and he blew his head gasket because of it.

I replaced my thermostat not long before the car got totalled and after driving around for 15 mins the bottom hose was still cold..... Then I sat in a layby and gave it some good revs for 5 mins and then checked and the hose was good and cooking. Temp gauge stayed the same but the thermostat clearly opened.

If you haven't already done it, Take it for a drive. It takes forever and a day to get them upto temp so the fans come on whilst stationary.
