Audi - Vw Insurance
« on: 06 December 2013, 23:44 »
Guys am with Audi Insurance just now for my current BMW X1...(dont ask) but had an Audi A3 Sportback Black Edition before the Beemer..so thats the sort story!!
I gave the insurance a bell this afternoon to get a quick quote for the Gti, and to be told am £36 more expensive than the BMW X1
They quoted me £361.01 fully comp protected, so i told him that we have had quotes much cheaper than this and are looking to go ahead with the cheaper quotes.
Audi's reply was - but we will give you a like for like if the worst happened and we would use VW parts to repair also it would go to an approved VW repairer.....
So I left it at that, and the more i think about it the more I think well it's a premium car and I should maybe look into it a bit more....What's your thoughts on this issue? Should I pay out for the Audi/VW quote and have peace of mind that am in safe hands if the unthinkable happens??? :undecided:

Hi

I got the VW Insurance when I picked up GTI.  I was quoted the same as you.  Well I say the same, I was actually quoted over £400 to start with, then I beat the quote down to the same as you have been quoted.  From my experience insurance dealers will vary greatly in price and VW Insurance was good enough and slightly less than what I was paying for my last car.

I have been quoted between £390 - £550+ for a civic type-r last year.  Just shows how specific and accurate quotes can be

Be careful.

Not all fully comprehensive policies are the same. While most will offer you to replace a car less than a year old with the new equivalent if it is a total loss, that does not mean that they all do.

Some, for example, will reserve the right to repair your car with "used or recycled parts"...

You do get what you pay for in many cases, so have a look at the small print before you sign on the doted line...

Most of the bigger insurance companies would replace new for old in year one, and all will put up a bit of a battle in a write-off situation beyond year 1 to settle. You will always have to do the legwork to demonstrate how much your car will really cost to replace to get a decent payout (or get some GAP). On a car so new you always have the right to insist on genuine VAG parts to preserve your warranties when the car is new enough to be under the protection of a warranty, you can also choose where your car goes to get repaired. They sometimes don’t guarantee a courtesy car if you don’t go to their approved repairers, but usually the repairers themselves can supply you with one. A courtesy/hire car is an absolute right if the immobilising accident is not your fault. Insurers repair terms are only applicable to their use of one of their approved repairers. If you choose to take it to a VW approved repairer (as is your right), an independent assessor will decide whether an item can be repaired/straightened out or replaced and in that situation a replaced part will always be a new VAG part when the VW approved repairer repairs your car.

You will never know how sh!te your insurance company is until you make a claim. Elephant were abysmal to me around 6 years ago, for a fully sewn up non-fault claim. Their legal arm were a bunch of money grubbing sheisters that cared nought for the client, they just wanted to screw the other side with vastly overpriced hire car costs and huge markup on any other incidentals. I’m sure they had a hand in delaying my repair to maximise their hire car profit (2 week repair took 7 weeks, and even then they only started at week 5 because I wrote a strongly worded letter to the MD of the Benfield group).

Long and short of it is that VW Insurance may not offer any more protection than anouther insurer. If there’s a significant price differential in it then don’t feel obliged to go with VW insurance.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

You are pretty spot on in your summary, MH.
My own experience with VW Insurance claim was OK other than the much boasted about VW courtesy car was a Polo Bluemotion tdi from Enterprise.
This was possibly the worst car I have ever driven in recent years and sooooooooo underpowered that I burned more diesel trying to make it travel t a safe speed than I would have burned in my GTD going faster.
This myth about small engined economy is blown if you actually look at the performance (or serious lack of it) you get in exchange.
I cancelled my VW insurance at this year's renewal...........way too expensive and taking custom for granted (plus that crappy little hire car).
On another note, I am getting an easy average 54mpg on my GTD and on a (too) gentle run to Edinburgh on the M90 this summer I squeezed an amazing 65MPG out of it.......fell asleep at the wheel on the way, though.

Been getting a easy 65-75mpg without any problems.

The only money I have spent on it aside from diesel and insurance is:-

£279 for major service
£135 for 2 front tyres
£0 road tax
£0 for 3x 10k services

Not missed a beat.

No disrespect intended.
My main point was VW Insurance providing a courtesy car for a GTD owner that was the polar opposite. I only needed the Polo for 2 days to commute 3 miles to work but if I had needed a serious alternative to a GTD for a prolongued period or long daily distances there would have been a big problem.
I think I had a 1 litre 3 cylinder Bluemotion......fine, but probably not if it's your only car.
If you pedal hard around town, it's not as fantastically economical although it is well built.
Anyway, peace brother!

I don't understand why people have to get hung up about what courtesy car they have. Snobbery I guess. Perish the thought that someone might think it's yours.  I had a Mk6 Golf S with a weedy 80PS petrol engine when my Passat was having it's rust dealt with. It did what it was supposed to, in fact I did around 2000 miles in 3 weeks in order to save putting the miles onto my own Golf.

As for VW Approved bodyshops, they really aren't all they make out to be. I have suffered and seen some pretty appalling standards of work from them. Personally I would stay away from any insurance company that dictated what happened to your car should it need repairing.

The courtesy car issue isn't badge snobbery in my case.....a VW for a VW is fair enough. It's practicality that matters.

If a Golf is your only car, surely an equivalent family sized hatchback courtesy car is more important than the badge it wears.

VW Insurance seem to think the badge is more important than the car, hence a Bluemotion Polo was provided.

My personal credentials are that I came to a Golf GTD after a Skoda Octavia vRS 170 (great car too).

(Before that I had two A3 Sports in a row and before them a 1.6 Focus which followed a 1.3 Metro!)

Had you needed a larger car for a longer period, would you have asked if they would be able to find you something else?
