GTi steering feel

Evening all.... :smiley:

One of my favourite features of my Mk6 GTi (2012) is the steering feel. It's well weighted, gives good feedback, and after driving some family wagons for the last few years, I'm enjoying my driving again. I'm assuming its a hydraulic system (?).

My missus has the new A3 S-line. It's a great bit of kit, and beats the Golf hands down in terms of quality. But, the steering is electric and feels too artificial. Shame cos it would actually stop me getting one.

So what's the MK7 GTi like? I haven't driven one, but I drove a MK7 1.4 recently and it was equally vague. Anyone traded up from a MK6 to MK7 GTi and care to share how the cars compare in terms of steering feel?

Electric steering will never generate the feel of hydraulic. Having said that, the artificially generated feel of the Mk7 is pretty good once you get used to it. It does weight up, the further you go off-centre...

The gti I test drove felt lighter than my mk6 at low speeds but I think this is more due to the fact that it bow gets from lock to lock in fewer turns. At driving speeds the steering had a good poised feel.

I find the progressive steering setup and quick ratio work really well; particularly noticeable when getting back into one of our cars without it.

m y understanding is that the steering on the Mk7 GTi is electric, which how it is able to change in different modes...

The Mk6 is also electric. I suspect the difference in feel is down to how the steering is "mapped"

Thanks fellas, will have to organise a test drive. Quite tempted by the R actually, but I'll wait for the reviews first....

Steering feel and feedback is a different league on the 7 compared to the 6, the 7 gives you more confidence and sealed the fate of the 6 for me there and then

Considering the size and weight of the car the mk7 steers like a shopping trolley - it's that sharp.

It does lack feel though I agree and I still feel more comfortable with the mk6 steering but it's early days yet...
