Adaptive Headlights?
« on: 04 December 2013, 18:18 »
I pushed the headlight stalk forwards and held it there for a couple of seconds and a headlight icon with an A in it appeared in the instrument binnacle!
I am guessing this is the adaptive headlights?
Didn't realise I had this as I thought it was camera based.
Does it just work off of the sensors behind the r/v mirror?

That would be Light Assist. The high beams come on above 60km/h and turn off if their is a car coming towards you. My wife's Tiguan has it and it works like a charm. Their is a camera/sensor in the rear view mirror for it.

Thanks both.
So if you're driving a dark route the headlights will be considerate to other drivers for you.
Nice.

Did you order the car new- you would have had to spec this feature and pay extra for it?

It's optional, even on top of the line GT spec.
Think it was 150£ when I ordered it on mine.

Yeah it's an option (a cheap one), and one that I'm glad the dealer accidentally left on. I originally ordered lane assist (for the traffic sign recognition), then found out it was incompatible with the GTD / GTI's, and so it was removed, but the main beam assist (which was part of the lane assist) was accidentally left on. I got it free of charge as it was their mistake, but so glad they did as it works really well.

I thought it (light assist) was standard with Xenons.

It's fairly weird in operation and doesn't always dip the lights, but pulls a black screen down over oncoming cars...

That's slightly different - that's Bi-Xenon headlights with Dynamic Light Assist (DLA) which we don't get here in the UK.

UK GTD's and GTI's get the Bi_Xenon Headlights with Dynamic Cornering Light (AFS).

The dynamic light assist (DLA) incorporates the dynamic cornering light (AFS) and dynamic main beam control (MDF) functions.

The layout of the bulbs and the appearance of the bi-xenon headlight with advanced front lighting system (AFS) and dynamic main beam control (MDF) is the same as that of the bi-xenon headlight with AFS. The design of the inside of this bi-xenon  headlight is, however, different. It features a group of individually moveable screens which can be swivelled into the light cone cast by the main beam lamp. The dynamic main beam control function, that is, the partial masking of certain areas of illumination, is implemented through a combination of the screens and the horizontal adjustment of the module.

So if you have the DLA lights, you don't need high beam assist as the headlight themselves mask off areas detected by the front camera as a potential oncoming vehicle,. Car's like ours with only AFS, can be optionally specced with the High Beam assist, which rather than masking off the main beam pattern actually turns the main beam totally off and on as required, as detected by the front facing camera near the rear view mirror.

Ok seems I have a bit of a mutant.
I have cornering lights but when the 'assist' is activated it looks, as stated above, as if half the beam has been covered i.e. same strength of light but horizontally halved.
I haven't driven with it activated yet so do not how it reacts with other traffic.
Will let you know.
