Idle hunting mk4 golf gti turb
« on: 28 November 2013, 19:14 »
Hi guys I just bought a mk4 golf 1.8 20v turbo. Used to have a ep3 civic type r and fancied a turbo. I have changed the plugs and doing an oil and filter change this weekend. I no all 4 coil packs need doing which I have ordered because it's misfiring on all 4. It is really jerky an lumpy when you accelerate and it judders massively but I'm putting this down to the coil packs needing changing, is it likely to be anything else causing this?? And also would the coil packs cause it to idle hunt because at the moment it hunts between 800rpm and about 1400rpm?? Also are the turbos meant to flutter, as somebody told me this is a bad sign?
Appreciate any help

What engine code do have?

I would get the coils sorted firstly. Not sure if it would cause the hunt, but if the are fooked, I would imagine it wouldn't keep a stable idle??

Flutter - check the vac system for leaks and make sure if hooked up properly. Perhaps previous owner has done some home mod's?

I would start there, but I wouldn't go kicking the ass out it the until you have sorted the coils and flutter.

It's a 1.8 20v AGU engine. The coils are common problem so I've been told so as soon as they arrive I'll be changing them. Also going to change the thermostat and temp sensor as apparently they are common, and my temperature fluctuates massively at the moment. It's completely standard never had any mods whatsoever, 1 previous woman owner from new now me lol. I can hear air escaping from somewhere, sounds like it's Coming from underneath the front of the engine but I can't get under there to find out

who told you coil packs are common to fail on the agu its the ignition amp that goes     and it sounds like you have a boost leak the hose under the inlet manifold is the best place to start looking

I read it somewhere on here about a lot of people replacing the coil packs coz they're terrible, but it's the first vw I've owned so I'm going on what I've read as I don't know myself.

I hooked it up to a diagnostics computer and it said I had a misfire on all 4, so I guessed that the coils would be the best place to start. There is 2 temp sensors which one would you recommend changing along with the thermostat? Thanks for the help people

Barrym381 I apologise for my comment earlier I have an aum engine, oops lol. I now have another problem, when I turn the car on and it first turns over it revs up to about 2000rpm and sits there until u blip the throttle, only then will it decided to fall down. Really starting to regret buying a vw lol

there was a recall on the coil packs in the aum then so phone vw an ask them before you start puttin coils in it  they usually do a check free but it sounds like your throttle body needs a clean and there is a boost leak somewhere
