« on: 28 November 2013, 17:31 »
Hi i'm Phil and i'm new to these forums so i hope i'm doing this right. I bought a 1997 gti from a guy that is supposed to be a mechanic he put a new near side drive shaft on the car and wheel bearing on the same side I had the car for a week and the drive shaft bolts fell out (on a roundabout ) got transported to local garage who refitted new bolts said old ones put on with wrong socket got the car back now its making a knocking noise very bad but only on the over run, foot down it stops, turn left or right it stops, the garage don't seem to know what it is but are saying they now think its the gearbox has anybody else come across this or knows what it could be Many thanks. update on gti
got the car back from garage new nearside drive shaft and wheel bearing fitted now the noise has stopped except when turning right even only a bit seems like it ( the noise ) has moved from the near side to the off side like i said before has anyone any ideas because the garage hasn't. thanks

Is knocking in time with road speed or engine? Also, does quality of road surface make any difference?

Check your wheel nuts are tight, I had a Mini at work which did something similar and couldn't believe it could make the knocking noise. But this was a rotational knock so would only apply, as SM questioned, if at road speed and not road conditions. Either way I'd check all the wheel nuts going by the previous mechanic's work!!

Can you put up a vid?
