new tyres
« on: 28 November 2013, 16:15 »
About to change all 4 tyres on '11 reg GTI due to alloy wheel restorer putting wheels back in wrong place and in wrong direction-spotted by VW dealer at recent service, put right but now producing horrible pulsing, grinding noise.
19k miles so not too shabby for first set anyway.
Any advice on best make/model to fit would be appreciated. 17inch alloys with standard Bridgestones at the moment.
All season? Separate summer/winter?

Now would really be the time to fit winter tyres, but then you'd be advised to replace them with summer tyres in the spring.

Many of us have two sets of wheels and tyres as (mileage dependent) we can get 3 winters out of a set of winter tyres, so it saves the hassle of having them swapped over. It might be an idea to fit winters to your car now, then look out for a second set of wheels for summer use. Maybe even upgrade to 18" Monza Shadows. You'll have plenty of time to find a set of wheels, even to get them refurbished if you want to and fit new tyres in time for the spring.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

If you are just going for summer tyres, then I can highly recommend Continental SportContact 5p's.  Best tyres I've ever had.

Good Year Eagle F1 ASYMMETRIC 2 with out a shadow of a doubt - Best Tyre by a mil and only £99 a corner

Michelin PS3's are super grippy but have a terrible wear rate.

Conti sports 5 is a great tyre but a little weak in the rain

Good Year Eagle F1 are mint in the rain, the wear is great and they have unbelievable grip in the corners

They also come with a £40 fuel voucher:

I suppose it depends what reviews you read, I have the Conti 5s and will definitely be buying again.

The Goodyears didn't do as well as the PS3s or CT5s  finishing equal fourth in the 2013 Autoexpress test.

2013 Autoexpress tyre test

That was for 17" tyres

The 18" tyre test give the win to the Dunlop Sportmaxx RT

Ha, was just about to post the same link!

RocketRoss - can't say I've noticed any weakness with conti sports in the wet, on the contrary impressed with their wet braking performance.

Cant comment on the Conti too much as it hear say from friends but i haad the Sport contact 3 and they were great, so im sure they are very decent.

I only said Goodyears as a first place as they are a great all round tyre. Price, Wear, DB's in Cabin, MPGs, dry and wet grip....all at least a 9/10 score for me.

Well I run them all year round and they've not let me down yet.

Goodyear Eagles always get the thumbs up from many forum members and if I wasn't totally sold on the conti's, these would be my next choice.

Many thanks for all your help. Combination of your comments and Auto Express test seals it for the Continentals for me. Don't feel the need for winter tyres on front drive car and ride comfort precludes 18 inch upgrade. See what deal I can get for set of four.
Thanks again
