Water Pump Failure IS This Common ABF Engine
« on: 28 November 2013, 12:21 »
Water pump failure is this common ABF  engine.

I have had this car like 4 months previous owner claims he has replaced water pump and cam-belt and i must admit it does look clean minus  the water leaking from the actual seal where pulley bolts on looks like the seal has failed.

I have only noticed the water loss since the car over heated few weeks ago replaced thermostat and re bleed the system and all been ok.

Since re sealing sump due to lots of oil leaking i aqua blasted all my brackets and have noticed the water leak then, as everything is clean and so much oil a grime was not noticeable.

Has any experience this with a certain make of water pump.

I'm having cam-belt and water pump ect.. replaced tonight with all new stuff.

As this could cause me major problems water spraying all over my belts and losing water.

Ive had three water pumps on my 16v, none of them leaked or stopped working.  First I changed due to been old and i wss doing the thermostat and cambelt anyway, second lasted a few months before the bearing failed and made it bloody noisy.  The third appears to be fine...
Just make sure its from a reputable brand.

i had one on my old engine new replaces so im going to use that 1 as it caused me no problems as is nearly new i should of really done this earlier especially with the sort of shabby work previous owner did.

Must just be a bad pump.

Not had a problem with the water pump at all.
My car is  a 97 and has done 149k miles so I dont think its a major fault.

I am putting a new one in the new engine, but then everything in that is going to be new!

i think its just a bad pump tbh i have had to change nearly everything on this engine to get it to run right minus the lumpy idle but i can live with that.

Previous owner did a lot of work himself and doesn't no a think it seems

Looks like water  pump was not changed and looks like an original VW one from new looking very sorry for itself now and has done 176k also had a non adjusting tensioner now replaced of course.

Does any one know what can cause the heat exchanger/oil filter housing thing to leak got a very small leak of oil from it.

I would guess the seal between the oil filter bracket and the oil cooler. Looks to be a similar seal I replaced on my vr6 oil cooler, can get a Febi one off eBay for about £3.60. part #19 (038117070A) below;
