First Golf: Took the plunge!
« on: 27 November 2013, 23:29 »
Hi all, new to the forum and new to the Golf scene. Just bought this from down the road, picking it up Friday:

Hoping £680 is a reasonable price to have paid.

Will be giving it a full once over when i get it home and hoping for no nasty surprises. My experience with the spanners lies entirely with 2 stroke bikes but I'm sick of getting wet so just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of the obvious things to go through when getting a hold of a Mk2. From what i gather I'll be starting with oil & filter, plugs, fuel filter - what are the other obvious ones to go for straight away? Haynes is on it's way.

Apologies if there is a thread on this somewhere, I have had a look through the Maintenance & info board but may have missed it if it's on there.

Cheers guys

I have brought some crackers from ebay...and some dogs  :embarrassed: Don't know an awful lot as I'm a girl
Don't know an awful lot about fixing them...as I'm just about to post a problem myself lol BUT you have a classic car and you won't ever want to be without one again  even if they do need the odd tinkering...stay with it

Just give it a good service and clean.  Have a look underneath for any corrosion and treat.

Welcome to mk2 ownership!

Thanks for the replies people - Hope it's not a dog then Ali!

I'll give it a good service as per Haynes and take it from there.

First of many i hope! Need a couple of years car no claims before i get ahold of a GTI; or a caddy....drool.

Oh yes, quick one; which tools are a must have? Decent socket set and Allen keys gets you through most on a 2 stroke!

Deep Sockets, Allen keys and spanners. The specialised tools such as front top mounts ect can be bought when and if you need them. I would have good screwdrivers and then a selection of sh!t ones to pry stuff with. If your car is anything like mine get some good splicing and crimping stuff for the electrics that will all break one after the other.
