Road Tax Query

Hi Folks,

Just been 6 months on my gti today at a whopping £154.00. My V5 states my car puts out 202g/km so which according to the tax table, puts my car in the £154 bracket.

The other day, when out having a ciggy, I noticed a big merc sprinter van (removals van). So i quickly checked the tax disc and they have £115 for 6 months. What annoys me is that this van with is 3L+ diesel engine. This must be put out more co2 than the golf...surley?

Using the online calculation (For petrol engines divide 6760 by 40 ( 40 the car’s MPG), it works out at 169.

I would go as far to say I regulary get 40mpg on a average.

Can anyone put some insight on this matter or am I just being stupid?

Might not be a 3.0 and diesels give out less CO2 apparently.

What you have done is tried to apply common sense, don't be silly.

The CO2 figures are based on the published figures, which are elicited under test conditions.

Later vehicles have been made very good at delivering low figures under test conditions, which don't represent 'real world' driving.  This is why there is an increase in the difference between stated MPG and what you can actually expect in day to day motoring.

Light commercial vehicles are cheaper to tax than the equivalent car.

I've just checked the prices for Land Rover Discovery's. A 63 Plate 3.0 SDV6 Commercial costs £220 a year, whereas the equivalent car is £475

I have always had the perception that petrols were always cleaner than diesel's. I meen most times on the motorway, all I have see if blue/black somoke coming from back off diesel's...and I think to my self...what damage is that doing.

Bellend...yeah they say diesel's produce less co2 than petrols according to the link.

TBH I'd rather pay less for my van and more for my car.

I need the van for earning money, the car is a luxury.

But this is just one shot from the film that is quite eye opening. The sludge shot is even worse as you see the amount of that stuff in the depths of the glacier as it breaks down on time lapse. Some cracking photography as well

when new diesels are alot more cleaner, however with age they start to become a bit more polutant, thats why you never really see a new deisel making loads of smoke (unless its mapped etc). however old deisels make more...

not sure whether theres much difference in the amount of c02 that comes out but id imagine so...
