Hard steering right
« on: 26 November 2013, 21:39 »
Hi. Daughters Golf has what I think is normal power steering assist to the left, but is noticibly heavier to the right and it also self centres much stonger from the right.
Wheel is straight ahead. Car doesn't drift left or right. No oil leaks, boots okay and has been wheel aligned perfectly. The cars been this way for nearly two years.

Would seem to be obvious that its the direction valve inside the steering rack, but before i go tacking the job of removing it, having it reconditioned and reinstalling, I thought I might ask if anyone has found anything else that might casuse this. Perhaps its a known problem that can be fixed externally. I'm looking for anything else to avoid doing the rack overhaul I guess.

Perhaps the cars hit a curb and the rack has moved in its mounts, or twisted in relation to the steering column. I'm looking for any other reasons like that. Visibly everything looks fine, but I don't have anything to compare it to.
The only thing I've noticed is the large rubber boot around the small universal joint at the end of the steering column is split, but the shaft and joint and exposed splines look clean and in good shape.

Any ideas?

Its a first for me and ive been on this forum for some time now.
I can only think that maybe its hit a curb and damaged the rack slightly.  Slight bend maybe.
