Quick question about cam timing
« on: 21 November 2013, 23:34 »
So jus got my head back from being skimmed and de coked ect and I'm trying to time it up but can't seem to do it , I can get everything timed up but the cam shaft is half a tooth out so the mark points at the "0" instead of between the "OT"

So marks I'm using

Crank - bung out the gearbox and using the line in the fly wheel which has piston 1 at tdc
Dizzy- the mark In the plastic covery trim thing when the top is off
Cam - "OT" mark

And every time I do the tensioner up (manual) it moves the crank round and pulls the timing out

Any advice ?

Will have another try in the morning once I've calmed down

Meant to say its an 1.8 8v ADZ

I've looked at guides on here but there tdcarj is a dot but I presume that's 2.0l as the only matching mark I have is the lugs for the vw tool

I have a thin line on my fly wheel and two lugs

I wouldn't rely on them marks being absolutely bang on, plus the skim has probably helped it move aswell,as long as its not a full tooth it should be ok,turn it over by hand first to make sure.

Stick it in gear to stop the crank moving, I bring it to tdc in gear by turning the wheel with it just 1mm off the ground then drop it off the jack.
Setting TDC on the crank via the window is more accurate than the stupid pressed lug on the pulley.
Main thing is to get the cam timed to the crank at tdc cy1. The aux shaft can be a tooth out as you can turn the dizzy to make up for it, the aux shaft allways spins and moves when your getting the belt on anyway grrr.
Skimming your head wont move tdc, it just means you have more slack on your belt to adjust and higher compression.
The timing marks are never bang on like the hands of a clock, thats why I check it all after with a strobe or the computer

The crank pulley will still move when in gear tht happenes to me the true tdc mark is on the flywheel the 16v has a rubber bung tht can be removed to see it. I dont know if thts there on the 8v the aux shaft is free spinning no mark on it correct me if wrong best way to put the belt on put the crank on first then put the belt on anticlock wise and leave as much slack as u can tensioner side otherwise when u tighten the tensioner the crank will move
