Just found this over on youtube. An explanation of the city emergency avoidance systems. It was conducted by our favourite TV pundit, Tiffany Nedell.

What made me smile is they test the little VW UP!, the Volvo V40 and an S-Class Mercedes. Whilst the little UP! only has a system that works up until 18mph, it worked very well, however at faster speeds (where the UP! was excluded), the S-Class crashed every time, whilst the V40 didn't.

Everyone always assumes that the S-Class is the pinnacle of engineering especially for safety system, but in this test at least, the Swede's beat them hand down !

Very interesting and thanks for the link :-)  Presumably the Mk.VII system has more in common with the Volvo inasmuch as it uses radar to implement emergency braking where the City Emergency Braking (which was in the Up! in the test) leaves off at 18mph?
