My first long trip -thoughts
« on: 17 November 2013, 22:26 »
Right lads and lasses, there's been a bit of negativity around here lately (rightly so in Jimble's case with the disgracious showing from VW on his car), so thought I'd inject some Sunday evening positivity.

Had my first proper long distance run over the weekend from home, to my parents house, then down to Cardiff to spend the weekend with my 18 year old nephew that's just started University there.

As my parents are quite old and the drives too long for my father, I was nominated the driver and the GTD was obviously the car. Right so first things first, extra air in the tyres (39psi fronts and 42 rears), as per the filler flap recommendation for a full load - and boy was it a full load ! Checked the oil, still on max, water fine and screen wash topped up.

Now I'm not exactly a small person (6'2) and quite wide and my fathers the same. My mothers (how do I put this politely), is big boned , so the wife was the only petite one of the 4 of us. Us 4 adults and a FULL boot load meant the car was well laden and the tyres had started to disappear in the wheel arches - so the GTD was certainly heavy. A full tank of Esso's finest and 216 miles laid ahead of us in Saturday.

First thing to comment, whilst you could certainly feel the weight, the suspension remained very compliant in comfort mode, and never crashed and still had plenty of travel. My father commented how much better it road than his Mercedes ! Route was M6, M5, M50, M4 and A48 into Cardiff. Decided to use the adaptive cruise on the motorways set at 76mph and it did fantastically and made the journey very pleasant.

The Sat Nav was superb and very accurate with the traffic warnings being especially accurate. The car just cruised all the way down and after just under 4 hours with a single stop we arrived at our destination. Everyone (including myself) got out of the car feeling not in the least bit tired or stiff - a testament to how good the seats, suspension and noise suppression were. Checked the fuel computer on arrival and was surprised to see 56.2 mpg indicated (and don't forget that's fully laden at 75mph plus).

Coming home today was a bit of a magical mystery tour as the M5 was totally closed due to an accident (thank you TMC - it warned me about the closure 30 minutes before it made the radio broadcasts). Because of this we decided to come all the way up the A49 - through Hereford, Leominster, Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch etc., which meant quite a bit of stop/start traffic in the towns.

Also, as it got dark about 4:30, and the A49 has large sections unlit, it was a real chance to test out the Xenons and the adaptive lighting which predictably was superb. I also for the first time used the auto main beam feature I'd opted for and found it fantastic. It switched to main beam, then the second it saw either taillights or headlights in the distance immediately switched to dipped beam - then just as quick back to Main beam. TBH this feature worked much better than I had expected.

Also, had some fun on the way back as the A49 is a twisty single carriageway for large parts, and when coming up behind a slow moving car or truck, when it was safe to do so, I hoofed the accelerator and the car (despite the load) just catapulted round the slow moving vehicle - the speed at which it accelerated really surprised me and left a huge smile on my face. Also the DSG performed impeccably, maintaining gears when cruising and instantly changing down when i needed to accelerate.

On my return (after dropping my parents back off at their house), I stopped to fill up again and the computer said...... 59.8mpg, and on doing a brim fill I calculated (for the whole journey weekend 476 miles), 56.4mpg (and I still had 140 miles left on the trip before I filled up).

Overall then (if you have read this far), the car performed impeccably and the fuel consumption giving the speed and acceleration bursts I was doing in a fully laden car made me very happy. The cars just clicked over 2000 miles on the return, so I still think when it's loosened up a little more, she will still have a little extra to give. Overall the 10/10 for the new GTD (although it's now filthy), and defiantly very happy with it so far.

Thanks for reading.

That's amazing mate considering the load and your set speed. You might have had nearly 60 MPG is your cruised at 70 rather than 75. I have one on order to replace my mk6 2.0 tdi and although I don't expect it to be any more economical I do hope it is just as economical.

Confirms my experience this week where I got 53.8 mpg and where if I was more careful through whole journey would have easily got closer to your figures though I was unladen.

Think the prime economy band where they got that 61mpg with the DSG is 50 -70 mph

Personally I am happy already and expect 55mpg to be my normal for longer journeys where cruising around prime speeds and around 50mpg when roads are a little more mixed on longer runs.

Had mine in comfort too and the GTD is such a refined cruiser, so comfortable as eats up the miles.

The kick down at speed is excellent, lots of power on tap to accelerate immediately into a better position like when a lorry is pulling into middle lane.

Getting 2 cars in 1 really as placed it in sport today and took it down some long twisting A/B roads and refined cruiser turns into a far more aggressive and pacey hatch, and where at end you hit local driving and go back to comfort.

Other cars maybe quicker and hotter but they can only ever be one car.

Some good results there, despite being fully laden.

I do think that the people seeing the best GTD mpgs are the DSGers (certainly the case for my dad). Maybe the GTD comes into it's own on a long motorways journey, something i've not really done yet - 70 mile return journey is the furthest i've travelled on a trip so far, and i've yet to crack 50mpg (maintaining 80mph on dual carriageways). The fact that the DSGers seem to be getting better economy than the manuals makes me wonder whether the gear change prompts are right on the manual MFD.

Most of the time, my car is happy to sit in 6th at 40mph on a 40 road. Drift down to 38 and it’ll ask you to change 6>5 (fair enough), then immediately it might ask for 5>4, still at 38mph, and sometimes immediately ask 4>3. At other times it is happy in 3rd at 18+ mph, 4th at 25+, 5th at 31+. It doesn’t seem obvious that the requests are related to a regen that’s trying to go on. I have seen at other times, the gearchange prompt is happy to let you labour in a high gear under light acceleration, when changing down would have resulted in better instant mpg. My style of gear changing mirrors what the MFD would prompt you to do most of the time. There are times when I feel it is right for me to change and the MFD is also thinking the same thing.

I’ve also yet to use the adaptive cruise because I’ve always been of the mindset that cruise is always thirstier than doing it yourself. Maybe this “intelligent” adaptive cruise is different.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Maybe the limited power and torque band (compared to a petrol) suits the DSG better than a petrol. All I know is that as it was with the Scirocco, it's excellent and always seems to be in the right gear, so much so that I don't even bother looking to see what gear it's in any more with the DSG.

Hopefully as well, the good run has does wonders for the DPF allowing it to clear itself out normally. I certainly think as a GT cruiser it fits the bill perfectly, and on a long trip (say down to France etc.) it would really come into it's own.

Also, could be my imagination, but considering that the car was fully laden, it really seemed to be much more sprightly especially the effortless overtaking. Don't know if that's down to switching to Esso fuel like you mentioned, or that the car now has 2000 miles on it and it's finally started to loosen up ? Drove it to work this morning after lowering the  tyre pressures back down to 36psi all round, and it got 48.5mpg for my journey (that I have recently only been getting 41-43mpg). To be fair though, that might be more to do with the fact that it was relatively mild this morning at 10.5°C ?

Also forgot to mention that I had my first encounter with 2 MK7's (one GTD and one GTI). The GTI was in Cardiff itself and came along side me (a CSG 5 door). The guy tooted me so I lowered the window, and he shouted across "how's the GTD - looks really smart", I shouted back "great - how's yours ?", We exchanged some pleasantries and then turned our separate ways at the lights. Then on the way back, another GTD was coming the other way (a red 3 door), and he flashed me and gave the thumbs up as I passed

Friendly lot these GTI and GTD lot aren't they.

Love it. It's when you start flashing other drivers who have them, and don't understand why, and you can see in their faces they looking at you thinking your a total idiot
