I'm interested.

Purchased my GTD thinking it was the cost effective thing to do but a recent irish motoring programme has changed my preconception of petrol.

What would the total cost including VRT cost to import a UK spec car into ROI please.
Mk7.5 GTD. DCC, Keyless, Dynaudio, Tech pack, Alarm, Isaac Blue
Mk7 GTD. Xenons, 18", Climate Control, Keyless, Alarm, ( all optional in Ireland...! ) Dynaudio, DCC,
CSG.
Mk6 GTD. Alarm, CSG.

honestly i'd keep it for a while especially as competing with the initial batch of dealer demos that are appearing in the classifieds so you are going to wince at residuals

its not like people didn't know the R was coming

if i had one on order i could understand having the conversation

I ordered the GTi even though I knew about the R.
GTi will be more fun but that's a subjective view.
I already got a R32 so didn't see the need for a R
Stick with the GTi and see how the reviews compare the two.

I have no idea what the cost would be to import the car to ROI I'm afraid.
I'm thinking I should probably wait to compare the GTI to the R once the R is released.
I remember 6 or so years ago I had a mk5 GTI and my mate had a mk5 R32 and although his car sounded great the GTI just felt more alive and for me a more involved driving experience! I'm sure this was down to the heavy V6 and drivetrain.

A remap would bring you close to an R and save you £1000's of pounds!

Correct.... the new Golf R still has a weight disadvantage compared to the GTi. Weight kills the fun in my eyes hence why I didnt bother waiting the 2 months to order the Golf R.
The Golf R will be a nice car but for my uses its overkill.
I ordered my GTi with lots of options, the Golf R would have had less/none so keep at the same budget I was working to.

However a remapped R just moves the goalposts again!

Weight wise 95kg more than a GTI PP, I nearly bench that it's not that heavy. I personally wouldn't of thought that would be felt through the car.
Golf GTI 09, CW, Bi-Xenon, DCC, 18" Monza's, Jakarta, RNS510, Dynaudio, F&R parking sensors, Winter pack...

An extra 95kgs is still more weight...... besides If I did go down the Golf R route I would have to opt for DSG and those mega expensive Nappa seats  which adds more weight.

Lets hope the next GTi gets a carbon tub and body parts to get the weight around the 1200kgs mark.
Whichever way you look at it, weight is a key factor in perfromance, agility and handling.

Every Golf R32 and R to date has under-steered, even the Audi S3 / RS3's act in the same fashion.... this is down to one reason, the Haldex 4WD system.
As each generation of Haldex develops it gets better.

Which is really more fun, a GTi or R? Depends on what your looking for
The Golf R is 95 kgs heavier and has 380nm torque
The Golf GTi is 96 kgs lighter and has 350nm torque.

Not much difference in torque when you factor in the weight.

I hear ya but... the 4 wheel drive system will be able to put more usable power down onto the road. Thus utilising most of the 300bhp. The GTI in similar driving conditions may suffer loss of traction under maximum acceleration. Thus not being able to extract all its 220bhp.

Back to the OP. I think @Munrohuna should listen to his gut instinct. However if you do switch you could end up losing a significant chunk if money. If the R was your dream Golf you should really have waited (as Wigit hinted at). Why not keep the GTI for a few years then switch. Should lessen the financial blow.
