Carbon Grey/carbon Steel Grey
« on: 14 November 2013, 23:18 »
As far as I know this GVTI/GTD unique colour is called Carbon Grey - 'Steel Grey' being a completely different colour (Mk.5/6). But posters here constantly refer to 'carbon Steel Grey' - have I missed something?

I think those that owned Mk5/6 still refer to it as Carbon Steel Grey. Basically for the GTI/GTD there is Carbon Grey and Limestone Grey and that's it

But I seem to recall that the Mk.5 colour was simply  called 'Steel Grey' - is 'Carbon Steel Grey' just a fictional colour name and not actually an official VW colour at all?

There are several version and reading US forums won't help matters!

Steel Grey is the mk5 colour carried over to the mk6 (United Grey nearly everywhere else)
Carbon Grey is the mk6 colour carried over to the mk7 (a fair bit darker than Steel Grey) and the mk6 in many markets had this colour labelled as Carbon Steel Grey as they had United Grey for their Steel Grey if that makes sense (writing this at half four in the morning so don't expect miracles from me!)
You can also get the mk7 in Limestone Grey which is lighter than United/Steel Grey and much lighter than Carbon Grey.

Pics shamelessly stolen from various sources:

Wow thank you for such a comprehensive description and illustrations!  And at 4.00am - much appreciated

I do like Carbon Grey (I just hate the idea of paying extra for metallic paint!).

I was watching this video on the german site. I don't know what colour that is, it's our grey, but looks the dogs bollocks.

Take care when trying to align colours you find on non-UK Mk7's - some countries have a much longer list of paint options (some of which cost over 2000 euros )  I initially found a colour (like a slightly darker reflex silver) that I wanted on a GTD in an Austrian launch video, but with the dealer's help subsequently found out that it wasn't a UK option...
