Gearbox mount?

Hi all,

I have this problem with my golf. If I'm stationary and select 2nd gear it is easy to get into and there are no knocks going into it. Even stationary from first into second feels fine.

However when I am driving along from first to second I have to really ease it in it seems and it does not feels smooth as when stationary it feels bumpy almost hard to explain. as if there are little bumps im passing when going into the gear. A few months back I changed to a quality gearbox oil which had little effect.

I use to have a old polo that when changing into 4th the gearstick use to knock forward slightly which was diagnosed as a gearbox mount. Does this sound like the same thing?

I noticed I think len has a similar post about getting into 5th and people mention bushes on the gearbox.. Am I right in thinking the bushes and mounts of the gearbox are the same thing?  Sorry if that's a stupid question haha.

Bushes are probably from gear linkages. Try rocking your engine and see if your getting any movement from the passenger side rear of the engine bay as thats where the gearbox mount is located.

Doesn't seem to be any knocking, Am I right in thinking that the gearbox mount is that one just behind the passenger side driveshaft where it meets the engine? Because that all seemed pretty solid!

Is the bushes on the gear linkages a big job? I've heard people mention that the bushes on the actually gearstick is a right pain the ass?

You've got a 16v so my first port of call would be to change the gearbox oil, maybe even get some Redline MT-90 in there.

Gearbox oil wasn't only changed a month or two back for some quality miller's oil!

Changed top mounts on suspension as they were shot but wasn't them knocking its still there

To be fair the gearbox don't feel the greatest on my golf when stationary its easy to engage every gear but when moving its harder, is it a big job to change the shift tower components and or bushes?

Still haven't figured out what the knock is

Just thought I'd give a little update on this issue.

Haven't solved this 100% yet but today I had my cousin in the car who is more mechanically minded than me (to be a fair a pieve of cardboard is more mechanically minded than me)

Anyway I started the car up and he commented on how much it 'rocks' and suggested the engine mounts were knackered!

I was playing round with the car by putting it in first driving forward a little then jabbing the brakes and each time it knocked, then it also did it when I cam to a stop and pulled off, excuse me if this sounds dumb but I thought this could be the engine swaying if the mounts are knackered? 

Anyways I'll have it checked out and post back

give the engine a good rock (by hand) and see how much movement you have (all 3 mounts can be poor/fail!)

I have just supplied a set of 16v febi mounts to a forum member (there £90 the 3 posted)

Often the rear mount does not get changed as its a pig ( proper ramps help a lot) and is not on the shelf or wrong at the factors.
Fragged rears load the box mount, combine that with cheap ECP/GSF mounts and you have a wobbly engine.
Change the lot, I do it as a first job on all my Golfs as they start to go from around 70k and up, you will be lucky to get 50k out of a set of cheapo's but I tend to scrap the car before this happens

 but is your battery clamped down properly and not able to slide??

Sounds like mounts to me mate. I would change them
