In terms of comparing real life with manufacturers mpg figures - do remember that the tests are done in a lab on a rolling road - no wind resistance!

That means they only really bear comparison with each other...

Spoken like an arse covering VW lawyer.

The car companies are very prominent in telling us that “the published figures are to be used for comparison purposes  between car manufacturers only and may not reflect real life results” on adverts shown in the last 6 months. They’ve all had a real bashing about the figures before that.

Even if these new figures are pure fantasy, the reality “actual” mpg should not be any less than was experienced on the previous generation, especially considering the eco-tech that is now fitted, that some may not have previously had it fitted. At the very least we should all be able to achieve the published urban figure. Compare my 44mpg GTD with full eco tech to my slightly heavier 50mpg  Scirocco 170TDI without any eco tech.

Dress it up any way you like – VW economy “improvements” which have been used as a selling point are a lie for most of us.

Looking at the GTI/GTD brochure: specifically for the GTI, with no asterix referring you to small print that would absolve them of their lie “it achieves 47mpg, representing a massive 18% improvement over the previous model. Now that’s what you call impressive.”
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Misterp: I know exactly what you are saying. If I though for a minute i'd only be averaging an actual 42mpg with my GTD i'd have gotten a GTI and lived with 35mpg.

10% worse fuel economy than my last TDI despite all the eco tech on this one? WTF is going on VW?

Once they add ACT to all of the TSI engines, I could see the death of the TDI - you'd have a GTI engine where most would be expected to see 40-45 mpg around the doors and 50mpg on the motorway.

Mh - I am giving serious thought to switching now to a gti the issue is the loss I will incur. Also, I was wondering why they didnt have the ACT engine in the GTI. My brother in laws 1.4. Gt has it and it's a nifty engine.

I had a customer satisfaction call the other day and she asked if I wanted to escalate the poor mpg as a customer complaint. I'm minded to go back to them and say yes.

Im watching the GTD mpg talk on here with interest as I may replace my PD TDI next year but the mpg of the new CR is not looking to promising.

don't be too worried nothing wrong with the new gtd mpg but nowhere near vw's claimed figures though.

Had the car for a 11 days now, and here is my niggle list....

1. Mirror fold - All other cars I have owned with this feature unfold on unlocking the car. (even the wife's Fiesta does!) . Washed the car for the first time today, and couldn't get at the front door glass due to being blocked by the mirror, unless I put the ignition on!
2. Reverse mirror adjustment - this is crap. The switch needs to remain in the L position for it to work. It should work in any switch position. (see other posting for my rant lol)
3. Car mode switch - When driving along you cant see the car mode switch as it is hid by the gear lever (unless you are in 4th gear)

And here is my smiley list....
1. The car is amazingly flexible. It can drive around town in eco/comfort mode and it is a very easy/relaxed drive. Switch to sport and hit the B roads and it pulls like a train. Suspension remains supple, yet very controlled. (However, comfort mode can give a little bit too much suspension travel over speed bumps)
2. Brakes are excellent... can wait to try out on a dry/hot day
3. Driving hard round tight corners, you push the throttle expecting the front to wash out with understeer, but the diff pulls you back in line and you go round the corner on rails.
4. Steering is very precise, and the variable rate is very intuitive and well weighted
There are loads of other points.... but in summary....

Excellent

Fine in summer, but if you put the mirrors on defrost in winter I have to remember to switch back over to L... (or am I just being OTT? lol)

Just thought I would add this post to balance it out a bit, no issues at all with the GTD, MPG is hovering around mid 40's (and mid to high 50's on a run) which I think is just about right.

Fast enough with plenty of poke, and no mechanical issues at all (touches wood)

For me the only annoying thing is that in this weather as soon as I've cleaned the car, within 2 miles it's dirty again (but then I guess that's the same for any car)
