noise from rear?
« on: 13 November 2013, 17:02 »
I've got a droning noise coming from the rear of my car, doesn't do it straight away only after a few miles i guess once its warmed up, seems to be speed related seems to drone faster or slower depending on the speed travelling at
and almost pulses as well,

My guess would be a rear wheel bearing its a 59 plate GTI with 28k miles which seems early for a wheel bearing, anybody got any ideas what it could be, do they suffer from wheel bearings?

Thanks

Could be a bearing, or could be saw tooth tyre wear, check
The tyre tread m8, its a common issue.

Very common to have stepped tyres on the VW range. And as you say Dunlop are quite a common one for it.. Thing is not even alignment cures it, so may just happen again on a new set.

Had this problem on my previous Golf (a mk5 GT). I also initially thought it was a worn wheel bearing but it was uneven 'sawtooth' tyre wear on the inner edges of the rear tyres - Bridgestones. 'Droning' is a good description, and the issue isn't specirfic to the Golf, but is also a problem on many other cars with a similar independent rear suspension set up.

Chances are it is the rear alignment causing the sawtooth tyre wear. For it to work you must fit new tyres BEFORE having the alignment done. I had mine done by VW for around £100 and it cured it 100%.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I had the same noise (27,000 miles). If you're not sure if it's the tyres, try moving them to the front and if the sound follows then problem confirmed.

Will be changing my wheels completely (I don't like monza shadows) in the new year and all alignment will be sorted with new wheels, had a quick look at the tyres today and seem to feel sawtooth pretty sure this is the issue
