Golf mk4 instrument cluster / clocks

Hi all I need some info from you I've got a golf mk4 Gti turbo on 52 reg AUM 150 bhp the problem I've got is the instrument cluster I took my car for an MOT and didn't fail on much apart from the ABS light doesn't illuminate on the dash clocks which the MOT lad failed it .after taking the cluster out of the dash board I noticed that there was a few LED bulbs missing ie the ABS and the Engine management light I went and bought another set of clocks which all the lights worked fine but the car wouldn't start (gutted) I've had a look into it and the clocks I found out are immobilised >2001 immo2 and 2001> immo3 what advice I need is how to get the new clocks in and get them to work on my car I've had a quote for £80 but that's deleting the immobiliser altogether from the clocks and ECU does anyone know who can re-set the new clocks to my car  thanks jake

Why not just replace the LEDs in your existing clocks?

I think you'll probably find that there are underlying issues causing the ABS and engine management lights to be on permanently, they will have been removed by the previous owner before selling to hide the issue.

Are your original clocks immo2 or immo3? You can code in new clocks but you'll need someone with VagCom to read the SKC and code it to the new clocks. There are instructions here:

I'd put money on the warning lights coming on as soon as the new clocks are coded in though.

Hi thanks for the info it's trying to find somewhere that can put the LEDs back in as there soldered and looks like it will have to be a very small solderer I'm sure with the year 52 it should be immo3 it's peed me off as when i bought the car last year it come with 12 month MOT which it shouldn't have passed when I got the other clocks in all the lights were fine but as the car wouldn't start I wouldn't know if they would go out I got it diagnosed in the garage and there was a few faults which he cleared so I could be doing with getting the new clocks re-coded thanks

Mate its only Recently that MOT rules came into place meaning that all the warning lights have to come on then go off once you put the key in if that makes any sence. So likely hood is when that car got its MOT the old owner took the bulbs out compeletly.

Just take both clocks to someone that is good with a soldering iron.

Or you can as Dom say get your new clocks coded in, problem is it is illegal to code in "2nd hand clocks" and change mileage. As the mileage is saved to the clocks themsleves, I.E if your clocks say 46k miles and your new clocks say 22k miles once there coded in your new clocks will display 22k miles. If you left the new mileage I.E didnt change the mileage on the new clocks to your acual mileage then that fine. But the second you alter the mileage at all on any clocks your breaking the law.

Anyhoo, Again as Dom said, you will require vagcome to find out what clocks you have, then you will need vagtecho to code the new ones in.

VW will do this for you but they will NOT alter the mileage on the replacement clocks.

If your existing clocks are immo3 then immo2 clocks cannot be fitted. Immo2 can be upgraded to immo3 but they will not work the other way around.

no its not.

its illegal to change milage from 46k to 22k when you dont change clocks and just remove 22k from your milage. but if you buy a set of clocks with 46k on them and you can prove your cat has 22k on them its perfectly fine for you to clock the car to 22k. equally if you buy a set of clocks with 22k on them but your car has 46k on, its illegal not to clock them 46k as your saying your car has done less miles. (Well strictly speeking you can adjust your milage to what ever you want, its only when you sell the car that you have to tell them about the milage correction, or i believe you can sell it with the wrong milage solong as you say it has incorrect milage and supply a correct milage via documents such as previous MOT and an estimated milage done since the MOT), otherwise all companies that do milage correction would be illegal.. but if you search on the internet theres hundreds of them...

otherwise i could go to vw now, get them to replace my clocks with a brand new set and my car would come out with 0 miles on the clock, then i could sell on as a brand new car...


reason the car wownt start is as said above, the clocks arent coded in. take it to a garage/autoelectricaian and they will be able to sort it for you either by replacing the LED's or coding the new clocks.

As above, you need the clocks coding in so you need to find someone with VAG COM and VAG TACHO/COMMANDER, that's if the clocks you have are the right ones. Easy way to check is to see what side the immobiliser symbol is on your new clocks and your old clocks and let us know.

It's a fairly easy job and shouldn't take someone who knows what they are doing too long. I'd offer to do it but you're a bit too far away from me lol, plus I'm off out to do the same to a Leon in a mo
