How hard are you driving? .. Tyre wear

I'm just about to pick up my GTi tomorrow , and we have been debating at work how long the tyres will last (as I am a bit heavy on my right foot!!)...and that got me thinking about the Forum.....

As a number of you have now started to get your cars, I thought it would be interesting to see how long your first set of tyres last... surely a quick measure as to how much fun you are having in your car....?

Can't say I've looked, but I go through tyres pretty quickly - don't know what it is, must be the style of driving as I still go through them quick even when not driving hard - I'd be rubbish in F1

in my previous 2 octavia vrs' with the 2 litre turbo petrol a set of conti sports would last me less than 10,000 miles..changing the front tyres was an annual event for me!


I suspect it will be similar in the golf..230bhp through the fronts and a car that can power out of corners with the diff..its not going to end well for the tyres

one of the reasons I didnt go for 19's on my order as its a huge jump in the cost of tyres!

In the Peugeot I currently have, they last about a year (30000km, swapping fronts-rears at 15000km) but I'm convinced that it's because of the geometry of the front suspension. My brother owns a mk6 GTI and they wear evenly, plus theirs last circa 50000km (swapping them in between). We both never let them with less than 3mm in the tread. I often drive in twisties (motorways are something rare in here) and have fun at the same time. So, I believe in my new one with the proper diff they will last longer, because the fronts won't lose their thread spinning on corners, but just put the power down. Happy times coming!
P.S. I'm stuck with Michelins PS3 as they last longer and have better steering response than ContiSportContacts 3 I had twice. My brother tried them, loved them, now he's on Dunlops RT. We'll see...

Hmmm...I currently have an A6 2.7 V6 diesel, and get through a front set every 4.5/5k miles.... good job its a company car

Bridgestone Potenzas on my MK5 170TDI PD - lasted 23k miles, wore evenly but were poor in the wet.

Dunlop SP01s on my Scirocco TDI140 CR – Hard to say, they kept developing sidewall bulges, 3 shagged tyres in the first winter with less than 5k miles – utter sh!te. Changed to Michelin Pilot sport 3 and they were still going strong when I traded the car in at 21k miles (16k miles worn and probably another 5k miles left in them). Excellent all round tyre.

Pirelli P7s on my Scirocco TDI170 CR – lasted 11k miles. Wore very unevenly on the fronts. Central 1/3 of the tyre worn to the markers, outer 1/3 either side of central still had 6mm left. If they had worn evenly I’m sure I’d have got over 20k miles with them. Changed to Michelin Pilot sport 3 and they were still going strong when I traded the car in at 23k miles (12k miles worn and probably another 10k miles left in them). Excellent all round tyre.

Currently have Bridgestone Potenzas again on my GTD – looking forward to 20k miles of sh!te grip because I’m too tight to replace them until they are damaged beyond repair or worn through.

My Scirocco GT 140 CR also came with the Pirelli P7 Self sealers, and mine at least wore very evenly. Did a front to rear swap at 15k miles, and when I traded it in for the GTD in September, the car had 23k on it and the fronts still had about 4mm and the rears 5mm of tread. Very impressed with them, and they were excellent in the wet as well.

The jury's still out on the Potenza's on the GTD, and as MH said, it's not hard at all to get the TC light flashing on in the damp, even with just a light throttle. On the up said, except for very poor road surfaces they are extremely quiet.

Jeez, I thought my old Passat V6 TDI was bad. I'd get 8-9,000 from a pair of fronts on that.
