225/40 18's

though a winter tyre will have a different profile I am guessing

I know I was toying with the idea of the 19's but is quite a jump in tyre cost..and when I had my octavia vrs front tyre changes were an annual event!

would the performance pack differential aid in cold weather driving do you think?

If you are changing to winter tyres on the original wheels, the sizes must remain the same to retain the overall rolling radius. Many people have a second, smaller set of wheels, so going down to a 17" wheels would mean 225-45-17 or 205-50-17, or 16" wheel (subject to brake clearance) would be 205-55-16.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

There is a lot of debate and opinion on the internet about the width of winter tyres. The standard summer wheels (Austin) are 7.5J (width) x 18" (diameter of the wheels without tyres). The tyres are  225 x 40 (40 is the wall height in mm).

The Swiss VW option for winter tyres is 17" Dijon wheels with 205/50 R V XL Pirelli Sottozero tyres. We can get winter wheels that are 19" and 8J, but the debate comes with theories on whether a wide tyre can grip in snow as well as a narrower on and whether the are more prone the aquaplaning.

But the overall diameter of the complete wheels is about the same whatever size wheels are chosen - summer or winter. The GTi with Performance Pack can't take smaller than 17" due to the larger brake assembly...

will 17's fit over the bigger brakes of a performance pack car?

No it's not. The 40 is the aspect ratio, which is a percentage of the width of the tyre. In this case, 40%

In this country winter tyres are more to do with cold weather performance more than dealing with snow and ice. My theory is more of the correct compound in contact with the road is better most of the time. When racing cars have wets fitted, the size of the tyre stays the same, it's the compound and tread pattern that changes.

I'm quite sure the 40 is the percentage of the tyre width and not the height in mm. Just measure them and you'll find out

I have just ordered a set of 16" steel wheels and with 205/55/16 wheels, you can get either the 6J or 6.5J, both will fit onto the standard GTI or GTD.
I'm based in Germany and we are required to get the correct tyres for the road conditions, in all a full set with Hankook icept rs tyres cost €418 including fitting.
Interestingly I could have had a set of 18" winter tyres fitted to the OEM rims, for €386 but decided against it due to the amount of snow we usually get. Plus the rims would get rather pitted in the winter, I will post some fots once fitted at the end of the week.
