just changed thermostat and temp sensor has not cured the problem could there be anything else to cause this or is this water pump?

Could the system need bleeding i know some cars can be a pin in the bum.

An airlock could be the issue but I've never found them to be a problem on any of the mk3's ive owned and all of them have had the coolant changed for various reasons.

Do you have coolant flowing back to the exp bottle through the small hose?

I havmt checked atm done some work on it last night  seemed ok done about 5 miles today then over heated bridged some wires on the fan heating on full and that kept temprture donw but its the fan that is not kicking in when hot.

turns out to be a blockage in the return pipe on header tank put a airline on it blew half my water out the header tank but has done the job all fixed not water pump thank god thanks for all you replies very helpful.
