After three years, how can it not let you update maps? :undecided:

If they have been really clever they will have implemented this in the firmware of the head unit, so it won't install updates after 3 years of operation.

so after three years the unit is in effect useless as no updates will be installed? I can't see this happening and I don't think they are that clever. even if you bought an official update it wouldn't install if something was flicked off in the unit. this will be interesting to see how navteq/VW do this.

@moggy where are you from?

The firmware could easily have a time or count limit on updates to prevent you continuing to install new map data...unless you purchase a firmware upgrade to allow map updates to continue to be installed.

I hope they haven't been this sneaky...

Where does it say you get three years free updates. I asked my dealer about this and they said there's no free updates. To quote "out of goodwill they will give me one free upgrade because of the amount of money I've spent on the car". Is this a load if bullsh!t I'm being given?

If the download is freely available from that website (which it is) and you aren't required to enter any authorization details to download it (and I wasn't), then I don't see how they can stop you downloading it beyond 3 years. It's copied onto an SD card. The Nav unit (Discover media) just reads this card, I don't believe it does any validation checks on it.

Besides, there are always ways around it even if they do. I had an RNS 510 in my MK6 and the map updates were easily attainable if you looked hard enough.

What's the process for updating maps on a Nav Pro Unit? The maps are held on the SSD which I obviously don't have access to.

My car manuals are in German (long story, dealer mess up), so any guidance would be appreciated!

Ha! Fair, I guess there is an option within the nav 'setup' menu to update the maps. I'll have a play later - thanks!
