New Golf R opens for ordering this week

Did anyone else read the specs and think "Why didn't I wait with ordering my GTI?"

That is tortue! 4 wheel drive & all that power! Why didn't I wait! Makes the GTI feel old news already! Lol.

Not really, I knew very well that the Golf R was coming but still decided to buy the GTi based on it being less costly from an ownership prespective and the fact that its an altogether lighter package.

If I opted for the Golf R it would have cost me about £40k approx, is the Golf R going to be £10k worth of more fun compared to the GTi, not in my eyes.

Volkswagen lost my interest in the R brand when they ditched the Golf R32 and the bespoke nature of the original car.

If I had to pick between a Golf R or Audi S3, I would have to be the S3

Agreed I'd probably take the S3 over the R but how do you get the R at £40k ?

For me once you start going into the mid 30k territory I'd be looking at a saloon car... Audi S3 saloon

The DSG would definitely be a tempter especially for launch control, 300bhp and 4wd of the line would be epic. The problem with me is i'd get the R and then a few months later they release the new TT and im wishing i had waited for that and so on. It's never ending 

Yeah I think DSG would be the way forward; my rule is anything under 5.5/6 seconds 0-60 needs an auto to get the full use of the speed/power.

You say that, but I bet the new TTS or TTRS won't be out for at least a year ie. 2015 - so it'd be only fair to fill that gap with an R

Up to 18% more fuel efficient than it’s predecessor – where have we seen that fairy tale before? 4 Exhausts, one for each cylinder – a bit much, the only visual drawback IMO. Can’t see this getting much of a discount, if any. There’ll be very few of these made compared to the GTI. 18” wheels as standard seems a bit mean on VW’s part. “Demonstrators allocated in the usual way” – out there well before paying customers have a chance to get one, even those who ordered on day 1. Anyone chopping their new GTI in now is going to lose a small fortune – Can’t see anyone getting more than £20k p/x on a vanilla GTI or £21k on a fully loaded one – year 1 depreciation is by far the heaviest. Your p/xed GTI has got some stiff competition from the demonstrators on the used market in the “under 1 year old” bracket.

Your right Mark about the RS but I believe the TTS is going to be released at the same time as the basic TT probably Autumn next year. There's been a test mule spotted doing the rounds at the ring but hard to tell what it's going to look like.

@2013GTI so you basically specced every option known to man  . I'd be surprised if you could get the 19"s with the pano roof

The car will be incredible for sure, but I'm quite happy to stick with my GTI for now thanks.

I've added £2750 of extras on the GTI but I did manage to obtain a significant discount. If I specced the same extras on the R the list price would be £8k more than what the GTI is costing me and I couldn't justify the difference...

I'll maybe explore the option in a couple of years when it might be tempting to change but for now, the GTI will do me!

I didn't realise they were releasing a TTS at the same time.  Hmmm that's a tempter as that will still pack a serious punch (the TTRS is just too crazy speeds  )  I'd be seriously tempted by that as the TT is an amazing car.

Based on the above spec prices, mine would be £34,645 - with a potential 12% discount that would make it £30,488 - very reasonable for a car of that quality and speed

I doubt there will be any discount available on the Golf R with approx 30-35 weeks lead time.
Keep a eye on the future Audi RS3 saloon, that should be a good package.
