« on: 04 November 2013, 01:41 »
Hi,

Recently bought my 1st GTi and loving it to bits, trying to find out what alloy wheels I have but cant find them anywhere so wondering if anyone knows what these are called, they are 18 inch, 5 spokes with 5 other spokes set 1cm ish inside.

Thanks
Darren

They are 18" Vancouver's, they were the option wheel on the mk6 GT and GTD, seems odd they would be on your GTI? Nice wheel mind.

Thanks, that's prob why I cant find them when im looking for GTI optional wheels, the reason the cars got different wheels on it when it was in the dealer it had some 19" chrome and black alloys, went back few days later to look at the car, they had sold the alloys separately and dropped the price by £1500. So these must have been a spare pair they had knocking around.

Welcome

Sounds like it might have originally hadGlendales on, especially if they dropped the price by £1500.  Did they look like this?

Those wheels are from a golf R.They are called Talladega and come in 18" or 19".They are very pricey though. Not seen many OEM ones on eBay.Id stay away from repro's though they look the same but quality poor.At least the ones you have are VW ones.

I do like these wheels but would rather take a £1500 saving and have the ones I got tbh. £1500 a lot a cash just for some wheels... and £1500 towards a turbo back milltek system :)

What wheels are better for handling tho, ive read some threads where people say 17" are better then 18" and other people saying it don't make any difference. would it be the same for going to 19" the handling wouldn't be as good as 18"

Those Talladega's came in either silver or gloss black. Those look grey, which would suggest they are either reps, or have been refurbed. If so, why?

As for handling, 17's give a better ride and handle a little more fluidly. 18's in my opinion, give the best compromise. The lower profile tyre gives better responce, but with less "give" has a slightly firmer ride. I've not driven a 6 with 19's, but I would expect the ride to be tiresome, so much so that you would not feel like pushing on and therefore never experience the addition grip they offer.

Cost of replacement tyres also has to be a consideration.

Much as I like the Vancouvers, they don't look right on a GTI. Almost as if someone has fitted the exhaust, diffuser and badges to dress up a GTD. If they are in good condition, you'll get good money for them if you decide to change them for 18" Monza Shadows.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
