The world famous MAF?
« on: 22 August 2005, 10:41 »
Hi everyone, does this sound like the symptoms of a faulty MAF? (1.8 20V non turbo) Put my foot down - accelerates but not like usual, seems to 'chug' a bit, then after a few seconds the power seems to arrive. It doesn't happen all the time but it's done this a few times now and you can never predict when it will happen. It will do it, i'll park up, then when i get back in it's fine again, whether it's 15 mins later or the next day.

I've done some investigating and a couple of the screws which hold the airbox in place are missing which makes me think it's been removed in the past which makes me think whoever owned it before me had an induction kit on  it which i beleive can cause problem with the MAF?

Cheers in advance.

hmm tricky one m8.. id be inclined to check plugs and leads firstly.. it could be a coil breaking down underload maf would normally caus ethe car to run like a bag of sh!t and not idle or rev up..

Yeah 99% sure its the MAF - the problem your having is the same as I had.  Get yourself a new MAF.

had one on mine too, similar thing and petrol consumption was all over the place..... could be worth checking the leads and plugs, i replaced these anyway when i serviced mine, so i ruled that out, the non turb model dosnt have a problem with coil packs like the turbo models as it just has a single igniton module and these arent known to fail

a exchange maf from vw will cost around £85

Cheers boys, it's getting a service tomorrow anyway so i'll check the plugs and leads first. Sounds like i'll be purchasing a new MAF though. If anyone's interested you can buy them from www.vwspeed.co.uk for about £75 (+P&P).

Cheers.

Nope, that's outright purchase. It says brand new and genuine VW part - no exchange or surcharges involved. Think i'd rather give them my hard earned than VW.
